I cannot sing this book's praises enough. Prof. de Mattei has knocked it out of the ballpark with this book. He presents Pius IX as he ought to be presented--from within the context of his own times and in light of Catholic teaching.

Great Insight into Secret European Societies at work in mid 1800's to secularize Europe and specifically Italian Unification

The Catholic Church World View is discussed in this book and how and why it unsuccessfully opposed the secularization of Italy. Pius IX foresaw the de-humanization of individuals by secular elites who believed that centrally controlled government by "enlightened" rationalists was better for the common good than any other option. The book covers their masterful deception of the populous who are gullible enough buy into their vision. It also frankly exposes the Vatican's inability to counter their arguments in public. Pius IX foresaw the underlying fallacies and fatal flaws of political 'isms': Communism, Nazism, and to a more limited extent unbridled capitalism. For those seeking a greater knowledge of the Catholic World View recommend read Catholic Catechism, 2nd edition. It appears daunting, but for mind's trying to make sense of what the 1800's brought into the1900's and the continuation of secularism without an alternative rational, its worth the read.

Wonderful view of Pio Nono's Papacy

This book is a wonderful historical overview of the papacy of Bl. Pius IX. To say the least, it's intense - it proposes to give an vision of his papacy, as well as a defense of Pius' major accomplishments, all within a few pages. Also, he gives endless footnotes to back up all of his claims. A good insight to the life of a good and holy man.

Richard Fletcher is the Bernard Lewis of Moorish Spain

Any casual reader traveling to Southern Spain for the first time should read Fletcher's book before departure. Simply put, it is one of the best summaries of the 700 years of Islamic rule in Moorish Spain. Fletcher's sharp analysis and story-telling skills make this book a real stand-out. If you are familiar with the work of Bernard Lewis, the gifted and prolific Middle East historian, I suspect you will appreciate the efforts of Richard Fletcher.
My wife and I own a home in one of the oldest Moorish & Jewish quarters in Southern Spain, have visited many significant Moorish sites and have read dozens of books about Spain's Islamic period, including Maria Rosa Menocal's "Ornament of the World: How Muslims, Jews and Christians Created a Culture of Tolerance in Medieval Spain."
We want you to know Fletcher's book remains one of the most dog-eared, and borrowed books about Spain in our library today. If you are a fan of Moorish architecture, history, music, poetry and art, I suspect Fletcher's book will become an important companion for many years to come.

A lucidly informative account

Dealing with the 700 years of Muslim civilisation in Iberia, this is a gem of popular history, entertaining without sacrificing scholarly attention to detail. The prose is sharp, evocative, and eminently easy to read; the pages are filled with ancedotes and stories that bring this lost world to life. A taster rather than comprehensive, this is an essential companion to travels in Spain, or an ideal way to begin learning more about this oft-overlooked period.

Arabs and Moors in Spain

Richard Fletcher's MOORISH SPAIN is an excellent addition to the library shelf holding Bovill's GOLDEN TRADE OF THE MOORS and Peter Russell's PRINCE HENRY 'THE NAVIGATOR': A life. The book is an easy and enjoyable read, but probably intended more for the lay reader than for scholars of al-Andalus (indeed, the author states that the work "is intended as an introduction to the history and culture of Islamic Spain" which lays "no claim to deep or original scholarship" which explains why it only includes a list of recommended reading rather than a complete bibliography with chapter sources). That being said, the book should deepen the understanding of the general reader.

Fletcher details the Islamic, Arab-led Berber invasion of Visgothic Spain (formerly a Roman territory) from northern Africa in 711 (after the conquest of northern Africa). We are informed that in large part the conquest was intended to further the Islamicization of the Berbers. Many of the cities were originally surrounded and reached an accomodation with the invaders allowing the continued existence of djimmis of Christians. Those which did not were crushed and the lands of those who made any attempt to oppose the invasion were taken and redistributed (with the Arabs getting the most arable land and the Berbers getting the remnants). Captives were either ransomed or - if too poor or otherwise unable to pay ransom - sold into slavery. Conversion from Christianity meant an opportunity to advance oneself and to avoid periodic outbreaks of anti-Christian violence. In the meanwhile, the conquest was pushed back from those northernmost areas considered least habitable, setting the stage for the slow "reconquest" of Spain.

Following Arab-Berber conflict, a descendant of the expelled Umayyad dynasty took control of Cordoba and his descendants, including the blue-eyed, red- (except when dyed)haired Rahman III who also had the blood of enslaved Christian concubines and hostages. The rule of the Amir of Cordoba extended to cover al-Andalus and he took the title of Caliph. During this time, periodic "crusades" and slave raids took place against inhospitable northern (and Christian) Spain while the Islamic conquest of Christian lands (as in Sicily) continued. Despite this, the weak Christian states of the north slowly began extending southward. Then in the 11th Century, civil war erupted in al-Andalus, resulting in the eventual establishment of various independent ethnic states (taifas).

These taifa states were slowly consolidated leaving 6 major states: Seville, Granada, Bajajoz, Toledo, Valencia & Zaragoza in which the arts and crafts blossomed. On the other hand, instead of al-Andalus interfering in the affairs of client states in the Christian north, the Christian kings and counts began interfering in the affairs of the taifa states while the al-Andalusian influence in northern Africa waned. Then a new wave of invasions occurred as the Almoravid fundamentalists came to buttress the Spanish Islamic states against the Christians. Shortly thereafter, the Almohads entered Spain took control of the Islamic states but lost ground to the Christians as they continued to push southward from the 11th to the end of the 15th Centuries. The last chapters deal with the existence and fall of the kingdom of Granada, last of the Islamic states in al-Andalus. Here we see the interactions and tensions between the Spanish Nasrids and the Moroccan Marinids (and the latter's successors, the Fezzans). During this time, an uneasy peace existed between the Nasrids and the Christian Spaniards; however, the Turkish conquest of Constantinople resulted in a determination to complete the Spanish reconquest.

Fletcher touches on the existence of djimmis (or "protected" communities) of Christians and Jews in al-Andalus and of Muslims communities in Christian controlled areas. In both cases, these communities managed to survive and flourish, to some extent, despite their second-class status. These communities were very vulnerable and were often used as tools in Christian-Muslim relations. Just as many Christians in al-Andalus either converted to Islam or immigrated north, so many Muslims in Christian Spain either converted or moved south; however, the Mozearabs (arabized Christians under Muslim control) and the Mudejars (westernized Muslims under Christian control)continued to exist and develop their own, unique cultures. Both groups faced massacres, forced conversions and ethnic cleansing as the powers faced off and as more or less fundamental influence predominated (as with the Almohads and the Inquisition). With the end of Granada, conversion or expulsion eventually became the rule although the Moriscos (often only publically Christian) were expelled in the 1600s due to their sympathies with Turkish Corsairs. The conquest had ended.

Totally great resource for fashinistas

I was really hoping I would hate this or at least find it to be mediocre, because my book budget has long been exceeded this fall. However, despite how hard I tried to find reasons why this could get sent back for a refund, I just COULD NOT part with it. I love it, it is exactly the kind of resource for a person who wants to do fashion design. I am a beginner; lots of ideas but not sure how to match to fabric characteristics. The book has great detail, great pics, and is a dream-stimulator extraordinaire!

Wow, what a great book. Anyone getting into fashion and sewing will love this book. Extremely detailed. I didn't know there were so many fabrics to choose from. It talks about the positives and negatives of various fabrics. It is a great help for someone like me. I'm getting back into sewing and fashion. It helps me zero in on good quality fabrics to focus on and which ones are easier to work with. I highly recommend it for young designers, fashion inspiration, sewing projects.

Great Resource for Designers and Especially for Those Who are using Green Fabrics

I am a new designer and have been looking for a book that not only describes the myriad of fabric choices one could use but also takes into consideration the impact that producing these fabrics have on the planet...this book is a fabulous reference not only for newbies to the industry..but even for experienced designers who are interested in True Green processes and fabrics...Gail Baugh not only writes with an intuitive style for the designer (answering questions that i had not even thought of asking) but also cuts through all the "merchandising hype" on green and really explains how to intelligently choose fabric manufactures who practice true sustainability. It is hard to find a better book out there that discusses the fundamentals of design and the impact that fabric choices have on the resulting garment as well on the planet that we all live on!! A must read for all designers, especially if you plan on incorporating "Green fabric design" into your line!

Great Resource for E-Mini Dow Day Trading

This book is a great resource for any serious day trader, who wants to capitalize on the author's vast experience of trading and teaching to trade E-mini Dow. It offers a set of conceptual ideas and psychological tips, instrumental in developing good trading habits and mastering different emotional states while trading in the live market. It also presents in great detail eleven trading methods for structured capturing of continuation, reversal and break-out trades. Finally, four trading programs, outlined in the last chapters, help to apply the book material with concrete financial objectives in mind, and set the stage for making a reasonable profit with the least amount of risk possible. Studying this book and implementing its wisdom in my own trading, has positively affected my bottom line and greatly improved my technical and physiological skills. Two thumbs up!

Too easy

The title boasts that there are 100 solos... There are a hundred but most of them are all just three line easy things that you can get out of a method book. No one would ever need to buy this book because it is only for begginers. If begginers bought it they would use it once and then be too good for it. I reccomend Arban's because they don't call it the trumpet bible for nothing.

Great book to get me back into trumpet playing

I used to play trumpet and was looking to start up again. The music is great for beginners and for trying to relearn how to play. The music selection is great from easy to play to a bit more challenging. I recommend this book to anyone trying to learn for the first time or anyone trying to play the trumpet again.

PROBABLY USEFUL ONLY FOR SCHOLARS AND "STONE" JUNKIES

This is a masterful approach to the primary themes and characters of the greatest of all Chinese novels. THE STORY OF THE STONE runs five (thick) volumes in length, has literally hundreds of characters, takes place in a very specific historical era, and mirrors both the religious and social practices of the time and also the broader political landscape in which the story takes place. I managed to love it the first time I read it even though I knew almost nothing about any of that, but successive readings have given me hundreds of questions, and this book has helped me find many answers. I'm not a scholar, so what matters to me is that this book, tough sledding though it can be at times, actually increases my enjoyment of one of my three or four favorite novels.

Who are you?

I am Antonio Libertino, from Tropea, Italy and I have a passion. I love to learn languages, as well as teaching Italian, my own language, to foreigners.That is the real joy for me and I mean it from the heart.

How has this passion started?

It all begun when I realized that I couldn't communicate with a foreign girl I fell in love with, if I didn't know at least English. What did I do? I took the first cassette course I could find and started learning as fast as I could.

Tell us about Speak Italian Magically in your own words. What is it about?

The title says it all, doesn't it? It's a book for you to Speak Italian Magically! I know you may think that this is far fetched, but let me ask you something. Do you know that athletes practice mental training before a performance? Do you know that they get better results when they imagine them-self performing at their peak? Well, with Speak Italian Magically I wanted to give you a mental training where you will first imagine yourself both in the situation and the place speaking Italian very well...Then if you follow the guidelines, you will be actually speaking very well!

Yes, as I explain it thoroughly in the paragraph that you will find in the book. Do you know what  the title of this paragraph is? The science behind Speak Italian Magically. What inspired you to write this book?

8 years ago when I started teaching Italian to foreigners I had a question. It was this: Is there a faster way to learn a language? Speak Italian Magically is my answer to that question.

What's the best thing in this book?

Speak Italian Magically will bring you in the wonderful places that we have here in Italy. So, At the same time you will experience Italian and living in a different country, all within your mind because I will guide you in a relaxed state where the learning is much improved. And I also recorded the audio with my own natural voice in two versions, bilingual and only Italian version. Because I really think that once you understand the text you should practice with the only Italian version.

In which formats is the book available?

Speak Italian Magically is available as Kindle ebook, as well as paperback. The main difference is that with the paperback you will get access to all the 20 audio files, recorded with my own natural voice, included in the price. If you buy the Kindle version you will only get the first two files for FREE to try the approach. Then you will need to buy the rest here on Amazon as a separate audiobook. Please DON'T use the text-to-speach feature of Kindle as it is not suitable for the Italian language.

About the Author
Antonio Libertino is a very widely experienced teacher who has also learned English and German. In fact he loves language and cultures, both Italian and foreign, and for this reason he took the Ditals (the certificate for teaching Italian to foreigners issued by the Università per stranieri di Siena), the Certificate of Advanced English and went to Ferrero in Frakfurt to learn German in the winter of 2003. There he ate three kilos of Nutella (Italian creamy chocolate) in three months but he didn't put on too much weight. Now he teaches Italian to foreigners, adults and youngsters from every nationality.

A refreshingly new approach

Over the years I have used many different materials to learn Italian: Pimsleur, Michele Thomas, online learning, and a tutor. Of these Michel Thomas was easily the best in terms of learning verbs and sentence structure. However, that was about the limit of the Michel Thomas course - you have to look elsewhere for nouns, pronouns, prepositions, etc, and you will not be able to understand spoken Italian (I still highly recommend it as a launching pad into Italian).

I gradually gravitated to an approach where I sought out materials that had both spoken and written Italian as well as English translation. You need to tune your ear by listening to spoken Italian or you will be able to speak it but not understand others. You also need the Italian text so you can figure out the words you're listening to, and you need the English translation unless you want to spend half your time with a dictionary. The dictionary interruptions are particularly nonproductive when trying to saturate your mind with Italian.

I started out by watching movies that had Italian sound tracks with Italian and English subtitles. Then I found some videos on youtube where some kind souls put lyrics to the Italian songs - sometimes in English, sometimes in Italian, sometimes both. These methods are both entertaining and productive - especially the songs.

This book saves you all the trouble of finding videos, mp3s, lyrics, etc. The book uses the basic technique that I developed on my own: Listen, listen and read in Italian (using the translations for comprehension as needed), listen again.

In addition, Mr. Libertino uses enhanced learning techniques to augment the learning process. This includes inducing a state of relaxation before what I can only describe as "sinking into the lesson", because that's what it feels like. You gently sink down into the learning state, do the lesson, and then you are drawn (very reluctantly in my case) back to normal awareness. He also uses mind maps to help conceptualize and reinforce the lessons.

I am an intermediate student and I bought this to help my wife get started with Italian, but I listen to it too because it embraces not only what I have found to work but supercharges it with enhanced learning techniques. It's also quite relaxing.

The first time we listened to the lesson my wife was hooked. She couldn't wait to listen again. I asked her to name a few Italian words that she could recall from the lesson. The first thing she said was "gioia, armonia" (the audio mentions "gioia and armonia" - joy and harmony). She also recalled most of the colors mentioned. Just 10 minutes of listening!

One night I was reading the English portion of a lesson and turned the page and just kept reading, when I suddenly realized that I was reading the Italian text without having noticed the transition! I have also noticed that with repeated sessions I can listen to the Italian-only tracks and understand them without having to translate. This is Mr. Libertino's goal: to have you speak and understand Italian without working at it - to think in Italian.

You'll need more than this material to learn Italian, but you'll be hard-pressed to find anything like it in terms of providing spoken Italian along with the Italian and English text, plus the ENJOYABLE and RELAXING way this material imprints Italian on your mind. There is nothing else like it.

I read all the reviews before purchasing this book. To be honest - I wish that that one person who reviewed it so poorly was reviewing it based on the teaching style instead of complaining about money. This author clearly was very thoughtful in his teaching methods, and has a true desire for us to learn Italian. I believe he could have produced a substandard product to make a quick buck if that were his intentions. He put so must effort into this book and it's absolutely fantastic. I had started Rosetta Stone, but was so bored with it - and had also picked up 2 italian phrase books before purchasing this ebook. His adventures both in english and italian help cement these important italian words and phrases in a really interesting way. I've been living in Italy for 5 months - and his book is helping me more than anything else. I'll be living in Italy for a few years - and I greatly appreciate the author's intent and hope that he has many more books like this to come - I'll be the first to buy it! A+++++++

The Best Language Book Yet

I've always wanted to speak the Italian language but have never been able to
find a book that would teach me to do so. That is until I purchased 'Speak
Italian Magically' written by Antonio Libertino. He makes it so easy with his
new approach to learning the language. The book is such a fun way to learn
rather than the usual hellish, boring, way of the other books I've tried.
I'd definately recommend this book to any person who wishes to learn the
Italian language.
