Inaccurate Description/Listing for book by both Amazon and the Publisher Pearson

While this is in fact a textbook what you are not told is that about half of the recipes, which are shown in red print in the Table of Contents, require you to pay an extra $65 to be have access to the publishers web site called Pearson Kitchen Manager. Additionally, there is MyCulinaryLab that you must pay for to do exercises, etc that requires you to provide the Course Code for the class you are taking at college to gain access. So no course code no access. What is frustrating is that none of this is mentioned. Also this specific listing does not come with the electronic media. Yes it is mentioned but only if you expand the description. It is not mentioned right up front. So Amazon needs to give a better description and not by buyers finding out after the purchase by going to the Publishers web site.

Having said that I would recommend the book but be aware of what you are NOT getting.

This is a great book. It is not a cook book, it is a textbook for professional chefs in training. I am not a chef in training but a home cook who is interested in elevating my cooking. The book is easy to read and very interesting.

I rented this book for school. I received The Professional Chef (CIA) as a gift last Christmas and thought it would be sufficient, but this book is chock full of good info (and good eatin'). I'm thinking about keeping it because they complement each other well.

Great little reference!

I found this book to be extremely helpful in my Molecular Diagnostics course and other courses as well that dealt with genetic concepts. Includes a really interesting time line and the history of genetics and genetic procedures. Does not go into a lot of detail, but simply gives definitions, procedures and concepts in a easy to follow way. If your regular genetics text is too much, try this book to supplement the text. Jammed full of information in a straight forward manner that is easy to understand, full of diagrams, and photos. I love this little book! I would never have gotten through my course without it! Also suitable for someone, not a student, just someone wanting to understand a bit more about genetics.

an excellent companion for biomedical sudents

As a Ph.D student in biochemistry, I found this book to be a very useful and comprehensive review. Also, I found it to be an excellent source for people who prefer reading diagrams and figures over long and boring texts. Over all, I recommend it for any one involved in biomedical studies or research. Other excellent books from the same publisher include color atlas of biochemistry and color atlas of physiology.

Geard towards more advanced French students

This series of books is great for those wanting to tune up their existing French. This book assumes you've taken French for a while and it doesn't dumb things down. This is grammar and French grammar is notoriously difficult. This book is not recommend for those wanting to brush up on their rusty French before going on a trip to Paris. That said, as someone who studied French all through high school, this book is great for improving the French I already know.

just confusing

I'm a "medium beginner" with French, and I am usually able to comprehend most of the ins and outs of the way sentences are structured. This book, within the first few pages, throws amazingly complicated sentences at you, and really without benefit of explanation as to WHY the sentences are structured in such a way. When being taught to structure a sentence, I believe that I should be given a breakdown of it and an explanation as to why a certain word must be put before or after, why some words are left out, and exactly what n'en MEANS!! They also use a lot of conjugations that really a much more advanced student would be more familiar with. I find it absurd that this is offered as a tool to teach students how to structure sentences when they don't really TEACH you, they expect you to already know all the rules. I made it to page 10 and after getting every single sentence wrong, I decided to put it away until I have already learned how to do it and then just come back to it and use it for practice. I have several other books that I have found very helpful, such as Barron's French Verb Workbook and The Ultimate French Review and Practice, and Practice Makes Perfect Complete French Grammar. But this book is just plain torture for anyone who isn't very familiar with the language already.

The Missing Reference

Excellent learning aid! This forces the reader (gently, of course) into integrating all the various parts of the language into something you can use. It is well-written, with many clear examples that actually reinforce that lesson's topics. I don't necessarily suggest this for beginners, but would for those trying to improve their writing and speaking skills. It is well worth the investment.

About the Author

Kathleen S. Verderber is an emerita Associate Professor of Management at Northern Kentucky University. She has been writing textbooks for over 40 years working for many years with her husband Rudolph F. Verderber and now with other coauthors. Dr. Verderber is at heart a teacher and enjoys the writing process seeing it as "teaching to a wider audience." In addition to writing, she has recently taken on the challenge of learning to play the harp. Dr. Verderber now lives in Naples, FL.

Erina L. MacGeorge is an Associate Professor in the Department of Communication at Pennsylvania State University. She teaches and conducts research in Interpersonal and Health Communication, with a focus on supportive communication. Dr. MacGeorge loves to help undergraduates understand communication theory and develop communication skills that are useful in their personal and professional relationships. Off campus, Dr. MacGeorge enjoys reading fantasy and science fiction, taking long walks, and any kind of outing with her family.

Pernille Eskerod is Professor within Project Management at Department of Leadership and Corporate Strategy, University of Southern Denmark. She has undertaken research within project management for more than 20 years. She has published a large number of articles on the issue in, among others, International Journal of Project Management and Project Management Journal. Pernille Eskerod has tested her research ideas and results on many students and practitioners in the field as she has taught a vast number of courses in Project Management. Anna Lund Jepsen is Associate Professor, Department of Environmental and Business Economics, University of Southern Denmark. Her research has mainly been within consumer behaviour and marketing communications. Together with Pernille Eskerod, she has done research and published within Project Management.

Like many great adventures, the 100-mile diet began with a memorable feast. Stranded in their off-the-grid summer cottage in the Canadian wilderness with unexpected guests, Alisa Smith and J.B. MacKinnon turned to the land around them. They caught a trout, picked mushrooms, and mulled apples from an abandoned orchard with rose hips in wine. The meal was truly satisfying; every ingredient had a story, a direct line they could trace from the soil to their forks. The experience raised a question: Was it possible to eat this way in their everyday lives?

Back in the city, they began to research the origins of the items that stocked the shelves of their local supermarket. They were shocked to discover that a typical ingredient in a North American meal travels roughly the distance between Boulder, Colorado, and New York City before it reaches the plate. Like so many people, Smith and MacKinnon were trying to live more lightly on the planet; meanwhile, their “SUV diet” was producing greenhouse gases and smog at an unparalleled rate. So they decided on an experiment: For one year they would eat only food produced within 100 miles of their Vancouver home.

It wouldn’t be easy. Stepping outside the industrial food system, Smith and MacKinnon found themselves relying on World War II–era cookbooks and maverick farmers who refused to play by the rules of a global economy. What began as a struggle slowly transformed into one of the deepest pleasures of their lives. For the first time they felt connected to the people and the places that sustain them.

Over a meal of fish, potatoes, and wild mushrooms foraged outside their cabin in British Columbia, the authors of this charmingly eccentric memoir decide to embark on a year of eating food grown within 100 miles of their Vancouver apartment. Thus begins an exploration of the foodways of the Pacific northwest, along which the authors, both professional writers, learn to can their own vegetables, grow their own herbs, search out local wheat silos and brew jars of blueberry jam. They also lose weight, bicker and down hefty quantities of white wine from local vineyards. Their engaging narrative is sprinkled with thought-provoking reportage, such as a UK study that shows the time people spend shopping the supermarket-driving, parking and wandering the aisles-is "nearly equal to that spent preparing food from scratch twenty years ago." Though their tone can wax preachy, the wisdom of their advice is obvious, and the deliciousness of their bounty is tantalizing-if local eating means a sandwich full of peppers, fried mushrooms, and "delectably oozing goat cheese," their efforts appear justified.

With all due respect, I have to disagree with the accusation that the authors "finked out" when the winter months came. Yes, they did a lot of traveling, but when they returned home they found "an incredible surplus of good food". Why? Because they had relied on the same techniques that many of our ancestors relied on to get through the harsh winter months (before there were super Walmarts on every corner): they canned, froze/cold stored and dried when things were in season.

I hardly believe that the point of all this is to say "you must eat 100% within a 100 mile radius" or you have failed, but rather to just TRY. Search out your local producers (it takes a lot of leg work at first, but it's worth it), support your local economy. And, in doing so, you'll meet some incredible people who are not just dedicated to protecting the environment, but who are also very concerned about your health.

I loved this book

Eat Locally. The subject of this book has the potential to be incredibly preachy, fundamentalist, and dogmatic. Instead, it's down to earth, fun, and intelligent. The authors teamed up to write about their yearlong adventure from 2 points of view - his and hers - alternating author by chapter. I was afraid when I bought this book that it would end up being another well-intentioned half-read paperweight sitting on my bookshelf. I'm happy to report that I devoured it in just a few sittings. It even has recipes.

It's easy to feel helpless to take any meaningful action when faced with all that is going on. The grassroots effort to eat locally has the potential for effecting real change in our landscape, economy, and health. After reading this book, "Eat Local" is more than just a slogan - its something I intend to do, and just as importantly, its something I intend to have fun with.

Reading Plenty is like gardening plenty.

Reading Plenty begins with whimsy. I enjoyed its early, leisurely pace. A seemingly perfect read. But, here's the thing: there's a passage that describes tomato picking in a late-season field that's littered with rotting fruit. Surprisingly, though, the sweetest finds are found among pounds of odd-shaped discards. That's how I felt about this gem. And that's why I kept reading.

The day-to-day descriptions of the authors' relationship with each other, their families and their relationships with the land are what hooked me. There's great writing in sincerity. The authors are honest. Reflective. And funny. Sadly, though, the best passages are buried in a lot of context that I suspect the editors thought were important and necessary ... like a magazine feature gone wrong.

Would I read the book again? No. Did I learn something. Yeah. Does it linger and would I recommend it? Absolutely.
