too defensive

Based on what I had read about pluralism by Congar, I thought this book might have some progressive, by Roman standards, insights into the role of the laity. Not so: of its five hundred and fifty pages, more seems to be devoted to the role of the 'hierarchical' priesthood than to the laity.

The author deprecates the view of the layman as one who kneels at the altar, sits beneath the pulpit and puts his hands in his wallet at the collection, but I am not convinced that he leaves us with anything more positive than this.

He writes that holiness, for the layman, is not to be achieved by retreat from the world but by active engagement in the world. Yes, but does this mean, as it seems to for Cougar, that the clergyman, achieves holiness by detachment from the world If so, how is the cleric equipped to minister to the laity so as to enable them to build God's kingdom on earth? He makes no mention of the worker priest movement of France. There seems to be a need to revive this, as the Anglican Church is doing, tentatively, in its NSMs. It is the robust members of the laity who seem, by Congar's admission, to 'keep the mission of the laity alive and who lead it. Why clergy, therefore?

Congar makes the right noises: the kingdom will not see a transfer from one sinking ship to a new vessel but will be the transformation of this world into the Kingdom of God and of his Christ, political action is necessary &c. but the whole tone is one of defensiveness, of fear of heresy, of the need for theological expertise on the part of the clergy to keep religion and praxis 'safe'.

He does say that the mission of the laity does not merely involve doing one's job well. There needs to be an element of prodigality, of festive celebration, otherwise the protestant work ethic takes over and workaholism becomes a meritorious form of Christian living. One does not feel, however, that Congar has ever faced the pressures involved in keeping down a lay job and being competent. It is all very well to say that Christianity is not an overcoat, to be hung up on a peg when entering the factory on Monday morning; he does not really spell out what it means to keep the coat on. It is not his job, apparently. The priest is to teach and preach the faith so that the laity have a firm grounding in it from which to work out its practical applications themselves in their own, secular situation. This sounds all very fine but the laity do not, normally, have sufficient grounding in the faith to be able to make links between it an the secular world. Neither the clergy nor the laity, it seems to me, are doing their job properly. We need to ordain laity who remain 'lay' in that they are working in the world rather than stuck in vicarage surrounded by old ladies, it we are to progress in understanding the secular implications of the gospel.

Mind you, Yves Congar was the first theologian to apply the threefold office of Christ — priest, prophet and king — to the laity by virtue of their baptism.

And after Vatican 2, Congar questioned the helpfulness of the lay-clergy distinction, wondering whether it ought to be replaced by a focus on the relationship between community and ministries in service of community

INTERESTING, BUT NOT PHILOSOPHY

This book surveys some issues of human evolution, accompanied by interesting thoughts on related issues. It is pleasant to read. But it is not "philosophy" in any serious sense. Certainly, the title "The Philosophy of Human Evolution" is misleading.
The book sometimes claims to rely on "philosophy," such as on the reality of races (page 219) and the concept of sickness (page 238). But these are issues belonging mainly to history of concepts, sociology and social anthropology, on which "philosophy" has little to offer - all the more so as the author does not discuss them in terms of language games or various theories of definitions. And the real philosophic issues raised by evolution are not discussed and in the main not even mentioned.
These issues include, among others: Implications of the theory of evolution for human self-understanding; moral problems posed by increasing human capacities to interfere with its evolution, such as through human enhancement; should humanity try to clone human beings? what about the possibility of creating life out of inorganic materials and its implications for human values, self-images and belief systems?
And, last but most important of all, what are the implications for human values of the emerging capabilities of self-termination supplied by science and technology as a main dimension of human cultural evolution based on the evolution of our brain? The author does refer briefly to some such possibilities (e.g., pages 83, 144) but fails to take them up as a main issue of a philosophy of evolution posed by the possibility that human evolution may have inbuilt tendencies to lead to the end of the human species.
I could add some minor critical comments, such as on the strange claim that "the story of human creation as given in Genesis, ... with the coming of Christianity...was universally accepted for over 1,500 years," which ignores, among others, Chinese civilization and its belief systems. But the main missed opportunity of this book is posing and discussing the real deep philosophic issues posed by human evolution.

A Good Overview

Ruse gives a good overview about ideas on human evolution from the viewpoint of a philosopher (naturally). But there are some areas that he misses or glosses over. Among these are polyphyletic ideas about human origins that persisted until the earth 20th century--the idea that modern human races have separate origins from some unknown great ape stock; the war against adaptation and natural selection that was launched by R. Lewontin and S.J. Gould in the 1970s and 1980s in order to stop the spread of sociobiological theory; and the realization that living humans are the products of hybridization with at least two different fossil human groups. As for the problems of morality and natural selection, which Ruse deals with extensively, people should go to the original source and read T.H. Huxley's Evolution and Ethics. Ruse has edited the latest edition of this book for Princeton University Press.

Great book for courses

As someone who teaches history and philosophy of biology on a regular basis, I will definitely use this book. Unlike an earlier reviewer, I find this book quite philosophical -- at least by contemporary standards (i.e., not attempting to speak "from nowhere" or "from everywhere". Biology, including evolution -- and certainly including human evolution -- is contingent and complex.

I look forward to using this in senior level courses, typically taken by philosophy majors, biology majors, and double majors. Highly recommend it.

I thought this was a great ending for the trilogy. I just hope we will see more of the Kane family if another series soon. Loved the cameo appearances from Camp Half Blood at the school dance! :-) I hope we might see a story arc mixing the demi gods and the magicians at some point?!

With "The Serpent's Shadow," Rick Riordan sticks with his winning formula: gods and heroes (or magicians) must work together to save the world--and they only have a few days to do it. In the final book of the Kane Chronicle, Carter and Sadie have to complete a quest to stop Apophis and the forces of chaos before they destroy all of the created order. Along the way there's plenty of humor, a little romance, some crazy outfits, and lots of fun twists as Riordan brings Egyptian mythology into the modern world. Fans of Riordan's Percy Jackson and Heroes of Olympus series will notice a couple cameos--and some hints of more adventures to come. It's a fun romp of a read. Highly recommended.

Honestly, I was a bit apprehensive going into this. Rick had left far more questions than answers at the end of TOF, and I had a horrible feeling that I was going to be disappointed with some of the resolutions.

I don't know why I doubted his abilities for a second.

Packed with the humor, action, and romance we've come to expect (not to mention including a suble nod or two to our friends in Manhattan), the final instalment in the Kane Chronicles Trilogy is guarenteed to keep you on the edge of your seat till the very end. An absolute must-read!

Most people can identify with the feelings and emotions experienced by Kevin (the main character) as he goes on a journey with his new friends that he meets along the way in the "Healing Forest." As the story unfolds, you'll ask yourself what you'd do if you were Kevin; and you too will be forced to take a long, hard look inside yourself and determine if you have what it takes to step out of the forest.

To the author: Inquiring minds want to know if Kevin's friends allow him to leave the forest? And if so, where does the "journey of visibility" take him?

This book is an emblem for those that require a visual to help them see how they are held captive in their own fear, guilt, anger and pain. It gives a great visual to those that need a description to guide them to heal. It's a great therapeutic guide for a young person that's definitely in need of Hope, Love, Compassion and Joy to their life. Yet, a good source for anyone struggling with their "visibility" through life. I personally enjoyed reading it because I thought, "Only if I had this to read before now, my path to healing would have started a lot sooner!" I really did enjoy it...and it was an easy read. I definitely recommend it.

Charles Latimer was a lecturer in political economy in England. In his mid-30s he began to write detective stories, and became successful enough to make a new career. While traveling abroad in Turkey he was introduced to the Chief of the Secret Police. Colonel Haki told him about finding a body, and Charles asked to visit the mortuary for the experience. Intrigued by the history of this Dimitrios, Charles decided to follow the trail and act as a detective. Dimitrios escaped Smyrna in August 1922 and went to Sofia, Belgrade, Paris, Lyons, and other places. The police knew of him, but can't prove anything. Then his body was found in Istanbul. Charles Latimer traveled to these places to try to learn something. One unforeseen fact is that it is dangerous for a literary person to get involved with criminals; they don't appreciate the interest shown in them! But a Mr. Peters offered to help him in his research by referring him to a retired businessman in Geneva. Charles Latimer should have found a cause for alarm when told he had valuable information, but didn't know what it was! But he continued his journey without any fear.

Chapter IX tells how a spy gained the friendship and confidence of a clerk in a government ministry. The clerk needed the money after he lost at a rigged card game. Peters told how he smuggled heroin to France in a coffin, but that couldn't be done regularly. The end of Chapter XI reveals the secret of Latimer's knowledge. [This is similar to Graham Greene's story "The Third Man".] Mr. Peters will profit from this knowledge. Their last meeting ends with rough justice. Charles Latimer decides to set his next mystery in an English country village. The ending seems unreal, forced by the need for Latimer's survival.

About the Author

Eric Chaisson holds a doctorate in astrophysics from Harvard University, where he spent 10 years on the faculty of Arts and Sciences. For more than two decades thereafter, he served on the senior science staff at the Space Telescope Science Institute and held various professorships at Johns Hopkins and Tufts universities. He is now back at Harvard, where he teaches and conducts research at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics. Eric has written 12 books on astronomy and has published nearly 200 scientific papers in professional journals.

 

Steve McMillan holds a bachelor’s and master’s degree in mathematics from Cambridge University and a doctorate in astronomy from Harvard University. He held postdoctoral positions at the University of Illinois and Northwestern University, where he continued his research in theoretical astrophysics, star clusters, and high-performance computing. Steve is currently Distinguished Professor of Physics at Drexel University and a frequent visiting researcher at Princeton’s Institute for Advanced Study and Leiden University. He has published more than 100 articles and scientific papers in professional journals.

Very readable and enjoyable... Hope hospitals "get it" before I need one as a patient!

I "read" the audio version... very well done. Well written, just the right mix of theory and stories, and for the audio version, the reader was excellent.

And I find this book hopeful... as a physician with 30+ years in medicine, I have a grave fear of the time when I become a ward of the medical-industrial complex. In general, it is not patient-centric, nor in some cases, imbued with much common sense. This is a sad reality. This book won't fix all that ails us, but the ideas presented, and the spirit contained therein, are a great start.

Highly recommend!

A decent reading of an important book (for Hospital Executives)

This book is getting a little long in the tooth now...but if you're a hospital exec looking to get a better handle on your customer satisfaction / net promotor scores, it is essential in my opinion. It's a great reminder of the "early days" of customer sat in healthcare, and really sets the groundwork for things like Value Based Purchasing.

The book is a good read, easy and fast. It is written in a conversational tone and gives great, specific examples. It can be ACTED UPON quickly. I enjoy reading it.

However, I'm now finding that it's easier for me to "read" business books via audiobook. Great way to spend my time in the car. The conversational tone of this book really lends itself to the audio format. The narrator is the author, Fred Lee. He's good at conveying the meaning of his book and overall is good. Occasionally, he trips over words and his voice is not exactly "radio star" quality. And the music that leads in and out of each chapter is AWFUL. But these are minor complaints compared to the value I get from having these discs.

The audience for this product is tiny...but if you're in that audience, you NEED this (either CDs, book or both). It's time well-spent helping to refocus on what TRULY makes your customers (patients) loyal and satisfied.

Thought provoking, but leaves readers in the "how trap" the closing pages warn of

This is a great book for anyone in a service industry to read. It's thought provoking and clearly organized with a number of illustrative examples and stories. The writing is by no means literary, but it is not poorly written. It has real substance which sets it apart from many similar books. Although the vignette in each chapter are helpful, at times they are verbose and so numerous as to obscure the central teaching of any given chapter. The book would be better if the "human interest stories" were cut back significantly.

The substance/rules/"things" are really tools for thinking about the problems you face when running a hospital and striving for service excellence, rather than implementable solutions to those problems. This is both the book's greatest strength and greatest weakness. The author closes by cautioning readers not to fall into the "great ideas but how do I implement them" trap. This is sophomoric. Although no reasonable reader will expect tailor made solutions, trimming the gratuitous congratulatory mentions of various nurse managers and spending more time on the details underlying their success would have been helpful.

Bottom Line: Good use of money and time, would recommend.

I was disappointed with this book. I didn't really like the overall tone of it and I didn't like how it was organized. It seemed like every other page mentioned vocabulary that wasn't defined until later chapters, which made it a bit confusing and harder to understand. I'm sure you can find a better ECG textbook than this one.

Easy read and great pictures

This book is an easy read and has great pictures. In my EKG class the teacher just reads powerpoints with photocopied pictures of rhythm strips; so basicly we are learning on our own from this book. I would recommend it to anyone who is taking an EKG class or nursing students (as I am) who want to get a head start on learning to read monitors. Very helpful!
