Over 100 brief biographies sketch the conditions prompting certain discoveries: for example, serendipity factored in the creation of toll-house cookies. The specter of scandal pervades this collection as, for one, Eli Whitney is exposed for defrauding Catherine Littlefield Greene of fame and fortune as designer of the cotton gin. Other inspirational accounts range from the development of household gadgets (Margaret Knight's brown paper bags), to industrial and scientific discoveries (Lise Meitner's theory of nuclear fission). This "herstory" refutes the historical contention that the abstract ". . . is not the province of women." Three appendixes provide additional information about patents. Photos not seen by PW.

With a catchy title and the fascination of invention built-in, this is the sort of volume that YAs will pick up, flip through, and find engrossing. Women inventors, both serious and frivolous, are laudedthe authors' theme is to give credit to women whose creative talents have been unknown or largely ignored. A mix of professional and humorous achievements with drawings, diagrams, and photographs (including one of a damsel in a corset who later died of asphyxiation) make the book journalistically intriguing. Further encouragement to future inventors is found in the foreword as well as in final appendix, which provides the address of the U.S. Patent Office and directions on how to file for a patent. Although it is not a book to be read cover to cover, amusement and feminist views aside, it would certainly provide lesser-known biographical material and be a source for unusual science facts. As the authors point out, most publications about inventors and inventions are all-male in their scope. Although all periods are covered, most of the entries are for 20th-century women, e.g., Helena Rubinstein, Marie Curie, and Rosalyn Yalow. Brief biographical information is given along with a chatty description of the invention. "Unsung heroines" are those whose ideas were stolen or appropriated by more prominent men. A must have book for all libraries

This book is an excellent source of information about the contribution women have made to our society. As a Middle School science teacher, I find that most of my students assume that inventions are made by only men. They are amazed to learn that women have invented many things, and many of the things we use on a daily basis. I use this book so much that my copy needs to be replaced.

An Inspiration for all women with an idea!

This book is an inspiration to anyone. A kick in the butt to women who are surrounded by un-empower-ers and naysayers who are determined to convince you how stupid your ideas are. The book tells you it's ok to have ideas and it's ok to have to try a few times to get the wing nuts tight. I recommend this book as a guide to anyone who wants to step out of the comfort zone and change the world!!! I credit Ethlie Ann Vare with giving me the inspiration to make music, write scripts and books and patent cameras and re create myself as a cyber rock star at 60 years old! I encourage anyone who has stepped out and accomplished something extraordinary to make sure Ethlie Ann Vare hears about it! Great for research!

This book really helped me with a history term paper. It has very conprehensive information about women inventors who have been forgotten. I was amazed to see how far back it went with it's women inventors. A very useful and interesting book. I would reccomend it highly for both research and pleasure.

A collection of dazzling and daring Japanese traditional art. Rimpa, one of the major art movements of Japanese painting, was founded in Kyoto in the seventeenth-century by Hon’ami Koetsu and Tawaraya Sotatsu. Years later, the style blossomed under brothers Ogata Korin and Ogata Kenzan and then was consolidated and popularized in Edo by Sakai Hoitsu and Suzuki Kiitsu. A characteristic feature of Rimpa is its rich decorative style, such as backgrounds with gold leaf, based on the classical Yamato-e style. Simple natural subjects such as birds, flowers, and plants were often used as motifs. Rimpa artists worked in various formats, notably folding screens, hanging scrolls, fans, woodblock-printed books, lacquerware, ceramics, and textiles. Many Rimpa paintings appeared on sliding doors and walls of noble homes. The bold outlines and striking color schemes are features of Rimpa style. Emphasis on refined design and technique became more pronounced as Rimpa style developed.

Toshinobu Yasumura, born in Toyama, Japan, is a director at Itabashi Art Museum in Japan where he started his career in 1979. He has curated a wide array of special exhibitions of Japanese art, especially concentrating on the Edo period (16th-19th century)and has written a number of books about the subject.

Rimpa Close Up

This is a great book. The pictures fill the page so you get a close-up view of the paintings. There is not a lot of text - more room for the pictures. The colors are very rich, some pages are in Black & White.
It is true that the binding is somewhat tight - I tried pulling the pages flat & I hope the binding doesn't break!
So far it's OK. Over all a beautiful art book. The other books by the publisher "PIE BOOKS" are very nice also.

As a serial entrepreneur I have my fair share of doubts against the startup studio model. I was on the lookout for a good writeup about the pros and cons while wanting to find out what makes them tick and how they address certain problems that comes with the model itself.

This book addressed a lot of the questions I had, backed up with numbers based on real research.

A Brilliant, Influential Man

A biography of Bernard Baruch written in 1957 (before his 1965 death), this book reveals amazing facets of American history from just after the Civil War (it's hard to deal with the author's attitude toward the early KKK) in Camden, South Carolina, to the NYC financial world at the turn of the century where Baruch made his millions, through all the organization of US resources for WWI, which he managed, the Peace Treaty talks for which he was an economic advisor, and the painful aftermath of its rejection, along with the League of Nations, by the U.S., dooming us all to WWII, when Baruch was also an influential figure. The author is too non-critical and assumes the kind of detailed knowledge of the then-recent past that any educated adult would have had in the 50's, but which is long-gone now. Still, a fascinating study of economics, anti-semitism, and the condition of the South.

I feel like this book is an absolute must have for every ...

I feel like this book is an absolute must have for every teacher and any parent with school age children (preschool through high school) with ADHD and I strongly encourage owning it. I have been reading and applying Sandra Reif's strategies, tools and resources for youth with ADHD throughout my 19 years of teaching in the general ed elementary classroom and in my past 8 years of parenting my own 3 children. Sandra Reif’s personal and extensive hands on experience in teaching children with ADHD brings her ideas and techniques into a realistic application in the classroom and in building the necessary connections between home and school. With all the changes that take place in the education system combined with all the new studies that are impacting our understanding of children with ADHD, I find that her newest edition is current and applicable to today’s classroom standards. Her book is incredibly easy to use and I can easily access the specific information I need fast. It’s my “go-to” book for information and strategies. Absolutely excellent!

The ADHD Book of Lists provides instructional, behavioral, and organizational strategies that can be implemented immediately. The book is easy-to-read and the targeted strategies are immediately transferable into the classroom. Each time I turned the page, I kept thinking, "Yes! After waiting a year for this book to come out, I was worried that my excitement had risen my expectations to a point that they would never be reached. This book exceeded them. It was well-written and wonderfully paced, never leaving me feeling feeling rushed or bored. Seeing Rose and Aaron's reactions to Kyran's betrayal, as well as Aaron attempting to cope with Kyran's identity left me feeling their pain and confusion. I especially felt bad for Aaron, who by the end of the book, still doesn't know what he should believe to be true and can't stop trying to protect the person everyone is convinced is the enemy. Add into the mix the legacy that was forced onto him and the personal battle looming over the horizon, and I worry how much of him will be left by the end of war. Then there's Kyran, who is being used just as much as Aaron and Skylar were, and yet I'm not sure he realizes it. As much as Hadrian cares about him, he's keeping important information from him and I worry about how Kyran will react when he, along with us, learn the truth. Plus, he continues to get blamed for what others do simply because he is ignorant of what's happening, such as when the Salavador Gate fell. We also learned of another important enemy who I think will become important in the next books, a strange power called the Influence which I don't think we've heard the last of, and a mysterious cloaked figure whose identity I have a theory about. This book was everything that I wanted it to be and more, and I don't know how i will wait another year for the next one.

Better than the first

I loved book two in the Power of Four series even more than I loved book one. SF Mazhar took what she had created in Run to Earth and built on it. All of the world building ground work had been done and now she added to it with ease. She introduced new crucial concepts into the story that has further enriched the world she has created.

The few minor issues I had with Book 1 were non existent in book two. I though the author did an amazing job with Run to Earth and Playing With Fire is even better.

The characters themselves feel familiar yet all of them grow and change as the novel progresses. The biggest change is in Aaron who has transformed from a boy who goes along with what others tell him to do, do a character that is setting their own path for once. He has been manipulated most of his life and he finally taking a stand and doing what he wants to do and what he thinks is right. However all of the other characters aren't sacrificed for the lead's growth. They each have their own story arc that they are going through.

The book fills in quite a few of the questions that the reader was left with at the end of book 1. We learn more of the backstory of a few of the main characters including Kate and Chris, Neriah, Hadrian and Kyran as well, that help to fill in a lot of their motivations that might have been confusing in book 1.

But for all of the answers I got from the questions raised in book 1, I now have brand new shiny questions that have arisen from book 2. I can't wait to find out the answers in book 3.

The end of the first one made me want more and this one is no different. I am sad I read this so quickly because I now have even longer to wait for the next one. I simply couldn't put it down. An easy 5 stars!

Well written and exciting to read!!!

The book is very well paced, well written and exciting to read. I couldn't stop reading once I opened the first page and had to finish it right away.
In the first book, SF Mazhar introduced the main character (Aaron Adams) to the realm of the mages and laid out the background of this new realm and his true identify. The first book ended with a cliffhanger and I couldn't wait to read the second book.
The second book went deeper into most of the main characters' lives and their back story. The readers finally understand the real reason behind Kyran caring for Aaron. There is also the love story of Kyran and Rose - who are now on the opposite sides - and the potential tragedy that can happen to this couple. Finishing this book made me want to read more and eager for the next one. I can't wait to read the novella on the older generation's pasts and how the war started so I can further understand their backstory and why things have turned out the way they are in PWF. I hope S F Mazhar releases the novella and the third book soon.
