Berglund argues that the city's rapid rise from a multicultural boomtown to a racially and socially stratified metropolis reflected the careful efforts of a nascent elite to order its inhabitants through political and cultural means.

Berglund analyzes the cultural spaces that showcased the contests that would determine the social order and who defined it. The book's central chapters provide snapshots of the micro-workings of power on five key cultural frontiers: restaurants, hotels, and boardinghouses; places of amusement, ranging from the brothels of the Barbary Coast to the Pacific Museum of Anatomy and Science; Chinatown's tourist terrain; the Mechanics' Institute's annual fairs; and the 1894 California Midwinter International Exposition—the first such expo held west of Chicago and an image-building opportunity for the city's elites.

By focusing on the role of cultural frontiers in the urban west, Berglund offers a new take on western history that explores the role of market-driven cultural institutions, demonstrating that the market was as important as the state in structuring power relationships in nineteenth-century imperial America. She shows that control over meanings ascribed to race, class, and gender—especially those generated in the city's cultural spaces—was critical to the incorporation of San Francisco into the fabric of the American nation.

We all know (well, most of us) what today's city by the bay looks like and even feels like. For the story on how San Francisco got this way -- and you should want to know this, too -- you must read this wonderfully researched report. From brothels to museums, it's all here. And barely a century old!

A New and Exciting Look at San Francisco

Just when you thought there was nothing new to be said about 19th and early 20th century San Francisco, along comes Barbara Berglund with this splendid and readable book. By examining how the city's social elites turned the cultural stew of the Gold Rush years into a stratified society more in keeping with national norms, Berglund changes the way we think about San Francisco and the stereotypes that still color its character. Using places of amusement, hotels, restaurants and other "cultural frontiers" as her guide, Berglund takes us on a fascinating ride through San Francisco history and brings us to the present with a greater understanding of one of the pivotal cities of the American West.

About the Author
Ian Ayres ,an econometrician and lawyer, is the William K. Townsend Professor at Yale Law School, and a professor at Yale's School of Management. He is a regular commentator on public radio's Marketplace and a columnist for Forbes magazine. He is currently the editor of the Journal of Law, Economics and Organization, and has written eight books and more than a hundred articles.

Pervasive Digitization...exciting or scary?

I'm now inclined to be scared after reading this. Data mining, data "mashups", pervasive digital surveillance...that's what this book is about. I'm no Luddite. I love all my electronic goodies and the benefits of digitization. For example, I like Amazon's ability trecommend fairly good product matches for me based on my reading and similarities to other customers. I like scanning technology to speed me through check out lines. But after reading this book and seeing the potential impacts to our privacy and to our lives, I'm feeling more pessimistic about the unfettered direction the technology is taking us. Marketers, like Amazon and the businesses using scanners, are mining our lives for all they are worth. More than you are aware of.

Decision makers like physicians are very soon to be replaceable with artificial intelligence. Good or bad? Good if you are the patient because of better decision making. Bad if you are the physician. You can be replaced by techs in the near future. Movie producers...your go/no go "greenlight" decisions can better be made by a data mining analysis approach. Authors? Better watch out...the publisher may soon make decisions about your books based on their digital rating as potential best sellers. Almost any job requiring expert decision making is subject to increasing data analysis that is better than the experts can deliver. Scary that even creative professions are vulnerable. Customers probably will benefit from the application of the "super crunching" approach, but something may be lost (such as professional decision making jobs?). And this trend seems to be exponential as data storage becomes commoditized and processor speeds increase. Anything that can be stored as data can be "mashed up" and mined for mathematical predictive relationships. Since most of us are unaware of the acceleration of this approach, we really can't see the implications until they are on us. Where goeth free will if everything is digitized, predicted, and manipulated?

This book is not for mathematicians. It is for the lay reader. Marketers and business people who aren't aware of these trends will be excited by their potential for use in their own industries. The writing is clear but unexceptional. But the book is incredibly thought provoking if you haven't been aware of the trends. The author, who is a data miner himself, is enthusiastic about the "New Way to Be Smart" and the potentials for vastly improved decision making that can enhance our lives, but we non-crunchers need to be aware of potential freedoms unwittingly given away.

Bloated Introduction to Statistics

This book is a typical example of a simple concept usually found in "Introduction" chapter on statistics book, and blown into a book of its own.

If you squeeze all the water out of Super Crunchers, it will turn into just that: a good one-page answer to "What Statistics is Good for?" question. I would recommend this book to any 19 year old thinking of taking statistics class in college, although he or she could safely stop after about 40 pages.

There is no substance, no story, no conclusion and no "main point" in it. The book reads as glorified hype of something old and trivial. The author never mentions cases when statistics gives incorrect answers due to incomplete data or unknown confounding variables, yet any statistician will tell you it happens all the time. He tells stories with doctors getting it wrong, but doesn't mention hundreds of flawed statistical studies where "super crunchers" got it wrong, except for one case where "the other guy" appears to be his colleague-opponent, and that part reads like a pathetic gossip intended for a limited audience.

This book reminds me of "Long Tail", a very similar bloated "book" about trivial and obvious matter. Every once in a while a man just wants to write a book about something, wants it real bad, but falls short of picking a good "something". Not every subject is worth a book, Ian. Sometimes a short article or a blog post will do better.

How to work smarter instead of harder

I thought this was one of the best books I've read this past year. I found it to be well written, entertaining and insightful. The author's main point is that people often put way too much emphasis on their intuition and ability to predict outcomes when computer models based on historical data analysis are often much more accurate.

One of the main targets of the book is the health care industry in the U.S. and how doctors especially place too much emphasis on their own analytical skills and not enough emphasis on data. I suspect at least some of the negative reviews here are from people in the health care industry. There are good reasons why health care in the U.S. is the most expensive in the world, yet according the World Health Care organization in terms of quality of health care, it ranks at number 37, between Costa Rica and Slovenia. An industry mindset that lacks a history of taking advantage of number crunching and thinking by the numbers may well be part of the problem.

I am self employed and since reading this book I've been more numbers oriented and have been more careful to track my hours and keep very detailed logs of what activities make the most money. It has worked out well, so for me reading this book was a great investment and well worth the price of the book.

Charles Island has captured the imaginations of Milford, Connecticut residents and visitors for many years. Yet, until now there has been no comprehensive history written about the island.

Included in this work are the historical facts surrounding the days of the Sachem Ansantawae, its likely discovery by Adriaen Block in 1614 (including a copy of his original map), the origins of the Captain Kidd legend. Kidd is known to have visited Milford and to have buried part of his treasure along Long Island Sound, the first home built on the island in 1835 by John Harris, the large resort, known as Charles Island House and later as Ansantawae House in the 1850s and 1860s, its use as a base of operations for a fish fertilizer company, causing considerable controversy among Milford residents and two legal actions, the famous prize-fight that went out of control, a religious retreat in the 1930s run by the Dominican fathers - a venture that got off to a sad start when six workmen from the retreat were drowned when returning from the island, its "almost" uses - over the years - Charles Island was considered for use as a summer anchorage for a major yacht club, an amusement park, a submarine-chaser base during World War I, a reformatory and a nuclear power plant, its role as a backdrop for several published stories including two written by one of the island’s owners. Three Charles Island stories are printed here for the first time in over 100 years.

Dozens of color and black & white maps, woodcuts, old advertisements, manuscripts, portraits, photographs and personal accounts provide a perspective of the island’s history never before seen.

Intriguing Story

There is more history than you know about the beautiful island off the coast of Milford, CT. Growing up there, I had heard about the pirates(True) and the monastery, (also true), and there is so much more. Well researched and providing more photographs than I believed possible, Mr. Dooling has produced a excellent piece of work.

Great book. I have lived in Milford for all of my life. I remember being out there many years ago and seeing the grotto and some other foundations. I grew up hearing stories about a monastery, a prizefight, and of course Captain Kidd. The collection of stories was hard to believe until I read this book. Very we'll written and a great read.

Swimming Lessons is a not very interesting novel about a ...

Swimming Lessons is a not very interesting novel about a fractured family. I do not really understand why so many of the reviews here speak so highly of it. The story is about the reasonably haphazard marriage of Gil and Ingrid, assorted offspring and couple of friends. The letters Ingrid leaves for her husband before she walks out of their lives suggest that Gil was a bastard.... their younger daughter Flora behaves badly.....and not much else. Otherwisethe characters are strangely devoid of any feelings. I had no sense of any of them other than some sketchy directions from the author. The only question I really had was WHERE actually was the story set?
The book "reads" well. I would say a fair to middling novel of middle england.

I know it's early, but I'm calling this as my favorite read of 2017. It's has everything I look for: mystery, love (and hate) story, and characters that grow by book's end. I read Fuller's OUR ENDLESS NUMBERED DAYS and though I loved it (I think I gave it five stars too) I might like SWIMMING LESSONS even more. It's hard to write about this book without giving anything away (and I hate spoilers) so just do yourself a favor and read this book.

Slow and boring.

I don't recommend this book at all. Flora is so annoyingly childish, the other characters don't have enough personality, that it is completely eclipsed by her. It unfolds too slowly. I'm sad I paid for this book, and that I had to read this for book club.

Excellent Effort

Plank's book is generally more helpful than the books by Kauffman, Hollingdale, and Safranski, especially in the emphasis on the hyperborean Nietzsche and in Nietzschean critiques of several major figures from the renaissance to the present. It is the best work and maybe the only one to connect game theory and the discoveries of quantum physics to Nietzsche's intuitions on such things as local reality and a conscious universe. The average attentive reader can get through it. Someone should have proofed it more carefully since it is missing some periods. Nietzsche's impertinent style seems to have rubbed off on Plank.

Poor Format, Overpriced (list), Shoddy Editing and Typeset, but . . .

At 555 pgs. and a list price of 30 fiat usd's, it is overpriced. Numerous typos, huge font sizing, superfluous type setting given the section numbering being similar to FN.'s; the overall effect is a largesse of paper laying out a text worthy of no more than 180 or so ACTUAL pages.

Being one, if not the only work of its type in the Nietzsche scholarship realm, excepting the oft cited book by Moles, and perhaps Deleuze's Logic of Sense, it's certainly worth picking up if one can find it below the list $30.

A few objections: With a certain 'lefty' toned discourse, the outright rejection of Marx on anti-substantialist grounds was impressive, though the author's idea that "ideal" social relations tested and put into practice as a consequence of a study of value from the perspective of WTP seems to run contrary to his own line of anti-essential/substantialism, i.e. "the WTP has no solution, when it expresses itself in such a game, it is entrophic." --particularly since a following digression on US culture ending in mocking the right to bear arms flies in the face of a passage from BGE I believe, which goes something along the lines of "in the next century it may be necessary for everyone to carry a pistol . . ." and clearly stating that this would NOT be a sign of regression, but strength and intelligence. Surely the right IS not, but, as one who had read Stirner, it is hard to believe that Nietzsche would support this proto-typical leftist/socialist plank especially, if one IS one's body, then the WTP as embodied thereto must also include its means to expansion to remain "auto-catalytic"--firearms are not MERELY useful in paranoid-chauvinist herd imperialism, but on the contrary, are the very means to defending and moreover ENFORCING one's sovereignty and TAKING one's rights into one's OWN hands at the expense of the herd, State, ect. Typical cognitive dissonance of an employee of the STATE, the ideology flies off the page. Nonetheless, Plank is otherwise fairly evenhanded with the exception of the above stated' timeliness-es'.

It does an amazing job at breaking down writing problems into compact units

To be clear, I rate this entire series as 5 stars for content, but 1 star for price.
If this were a black and white workbook for around $10, I would always order these as a required text for my students. It does an amazing job at breaking down writing problems into compact units, giving brief but thorough explanations and then following that up with a small variety of exercises, and concluding with a quiz. My students respond well to the exercises and I do see an improvement in the problem we're working on. As a writing text, it is perhaps lacking in that it focuses on individual problems, and isn't that great at looking at writing as a whole. This is why I would prefer this as a workbook. It serves a necessary purpose, but at this price, I can't in good conscience require my students to buy it.
