His family slaughtered in far-off China, young Jacob Cato finds sanctuary in a Xi Lin temple. There he heals and learns to be strong.

Now, Jacob wishes to join his care-takers as a full member of the temple and is told he must first return to his homeland and make peace with his English inheritance.

At Evelyn Stanton’s lavish wedding, the bald-headed Chinese monk striding down the center aisle is shocking. Watching that man dispatch three groomsmen, unarmed, then learning he is the long-lost heir to the Earldom of Warhaven and the new groom, is even more so.

But Evelyn Stanton isn't the typical blushing bride. A fully realized woman, she isn't about to marry the very non-English Jacob Cato just because she was betrothed to him when she was six.

At the sight of the very beautiful and very English Evelyn Stanton, Jacob's body begins burning with an unexpected passion and the past he thought forgotten takes new form. The murderer who slaughtered his family and left him for dead will pay. His lawful English heritage will be claimed and he will have the woman who is rightfully his.

Jacob Cato has come to make his peace. How that peace will come, is about to be decided.

Ok, but not recommended.

STORY BRIEF:
Jacob and his family went to China when he was 10. Someone in England hired bandits to kill his family. He survived and was raised by monks. He wanted to become a monk, but they sent him to England to resolve issues from his past before doing so. Jacob was heir to the earldom of Warhaven. After his father's death, the uncle became earl and the uncle's son Christopher became heir. As a child, a marriage had been arranged for Jacob and Evelyn. Now, Evelyn is to marry Christopher. Jacob arrives in England during the wedding ceremony which is stopped due to the confusion of Jacob's arrival. Jacob and Evelyn are drawn to each other, yet she still loves Christopher. Jacob is drawn to both being a monk and staying in England. Jacob is skilled in martial arts fighting, and there are some scenes showing his fighting skills.

REVIEWER'S OPINION (INCLUDES SOME SPOILERS):
At times I wanted the story to be over. I wasn't drawn in enough. I wasn't surprised or delighted or smiling. The issues and characters were similar to other romance novels. Another problem was the unresolved plot issue. The reader never learns who hired the killers, and no justice is done. I am wondering if the author: (1) couldn't think of an interesting motive or killer, (2) just got tired of writing and ended the book early, or (3) plans a sequel. Having a sequel to resolve this particular plot issue does not appeal to me. I would prefer a sequel about other characters, not to finish this first story. In addition, the ending concerning the couple was odd, leaving questions in my mind. I would have liked an epilogue describing the couple's life, locations and finances in the future.

DATA:
Story length: 292 pages. Sexual language: mild. Number of sex scenes: 4. Total number of sex scene pages: 18. Setting: unspecified time probably early 1800s England. Copyright: 2008. Genre: historical romance.

An exotic and emotional historical romantic tale of self discovery
By Leslie Tramposch
I read my first full length romance novel in the early 70's when I was a mere teen. The story was of Lucy Waring, a young English girl raised in a Chinese mission after the death of her missionary parents. The tide in that country had turned against the "foreign devils" and one minute Lucy is stealing to feed the mouths of the younger children, the next she finds herself in Regency England at Moonrakers, the home of the Falcons where she becomes torn between the desires to two men, a noble of challenged sanity who can provide for her every need and a commoner whom she loves but can't begin to understand. The story was MOONRAKER'S BRIDE by Madeleine Brent (Peter O'Donnell) and it remains one of my all time favorites today.

I mention this because style and subject matter of THE DRAGON EARL brought back me to that long ago favorite. Jade Lee has brought that exotic flavor that I loved so much in MOONRAKER'S BRIDE back Regency England. THE DRAGON EARL is however destined to join it on my keeper's self based on its own merits. It is an incredible tale of self discovery for both the hero who has lived a life very different from the one he was born into and the heroine who is trapped by the very life she's been expected to lead since birth.

Mere moments before Evelyn Stanton say's "I do" to her betrothed Christopher Cato, the future Earl of Warhaven, the wedding is disrupted by a Chinese monk. Evelyn is shocked to discover that the man is not Chinese at all, but white. He claims that he is Jacob Cato, Christopher's long lost and presumably dead cousin, the true heir to the Earldom and that he is here to claim his promised bride.

The youngest of the family of solicitors who served the Cato's had been a childhood friend of Jacob's. The man before them had shared memories of their times together.
He is convinced that he is the true earl. Jacob's grandmother also sees a strong physical resemblance between the man claiming to be her grandson and her late husband.

Pandemonium breaks out as "Jacob" easily dispatches three of Christopher's groomsmen who try to remove him from the church. While the current Earl sputters and consults with Evelyn's parents, Christopher's grandmother proclaims the Monk to be her long lost grandson.

Evelyn appears to be just as furious at the intrusion as her future husband but realizes their marriage will not take place that day. It appears that this man claiming to be Jacob is not going to go away, so while things are sorted out she offers Jacob a room in her home presumably to keep him close until Christopher's father can discredit him.

Jacob's father, the former Earl of Warhaven had chafed at his responsibilities and for reasons know only to him had decide to take his family off to China when he'd been a child of ten. There the family had been set upon by bandits while Jacob had been playing with the young son of their Chinese guide. Both boys had witnessed the murders helpless to intervene. Jacob had been taken to the temple where he had chafed and stewed and waited for his English family to retrieve him. But no one had come. He had later discovered that the bandits had been well paid by someone in England to kill his entire family. He had lived in fear that this person would find out he had survived. His dark secret that he has shared with no one is that when he'd grown and learned to fight at the temple, he had sought out the bandits, killing each one. Still he had not found peace.

Afterwards the Earl's manservant had returned to England family to report that the entire family had been murdered. Christopher's father as next in line had assumed the responsibility and all had agreed he was far more suited to the responsibility than his late brother. The obligation to marry Evelyn and join the lands of both families had passed to Christopher.

Jacob, who thinks of himself as Jie Ke wants nothing to do with the title or the woman. He wants to become fully a monk of the Xi Lin temple. However through what Jacob feels is prejudice against his race by his otherwise holy master, he had been told that he must explore his English roots and find himself before he can be accepted as such.

Evelyn has secretly yearned for the passion her future station denies to her. Even as a child she had relished dancing in thunderstorms. Jacob is powerful and exotic, everything she wants to be but isn't. She is the only thing the can quell the turmoil in Jacob's soul. What does it all mean? Deep within Jie Ke the apprentice monk who cannot seem to find the inner peace necessary to be ordained, is still the child Jacob who had helplessly watched his as his family was murdered and now found that his lifelong quest for vengeance had left him empty. Evelyn soon realizes what the wise temple leader had always known; only Jacob could set himself free. Can Jacob Jie Ke Cato forgive himself, let go of his hatred and his past to at last find peace? Will Evelyn find the courage to give up the security of the only life she ever known and take a leap with a man who had opened her mind and her heart to a world of possibilities?

Though the mystery of who paid to have Jacob's family killed is never resolved, it matters not. The important thing is the pair learn leave the past behind in order to embrace the future. Oh and what a fantastic journey it is! THE DRAGON EARL is a stunning and highly evocative tale of self discovery that leads to a simple truth that defines all human beings regardless of culture. Life should be lived in the here and now. The past is gone. The future awaits. Amen to that. ~ reviewed for PNR Reviews

Mixed Review... Original Hero but average heroine
By Melissa
Jade Lee has taken a departure from her entertaining Dragon series into the world of Regency England but she kept a little taste of China for her readers. This book is highly original with a hero who is no ordinary English aristocrat. The heroine, however is a little on the bland side compared to him and she is just a little too unsure of herself for too long.

The novel begins with Evelyn's wedding to Christopher the future Earl of Warhaven but before I do's are exchanged, the wedding is stopped by an Englishman wearing a Chinese monk's robes. The Englishman, Jacob, claims to be the Earl. When he was a boy his family visited China and while there, were attacked by bandits, killing all but him. He was raised by Buddhist monks and now is on a pilgrimage to stop the wedding, and let all know he is alive. He does so only because he wants to take his vows as a monk and the head of the monastery has required this pilgrimage.

Evelyn is furious over the interruption of her wedding. Chris is also angry and his father declares Jacob an imposter. However, he knows way too much about the family.

Evelyn is drawn to Jacob right from the start. She was betrothed to him when they were only children and she finds him fascinating. Before the week is out they are engaged in some steamy lovemaking.

Evelyn is wishy washy. She wants to stay true to Chris but also wants Jacob. In fact she wants Jacob in her bed knowing she will go to his cousin without her virginity. I guess she plans to pretend to be virginal on her wedding night. This was a bit troubling for me. Her character seemed selfish. I liked her desire to experience life as more than a countess and her yen to be less than proper was refreshing but not at the expense of people you love.

Jacob is troubled by his past, present and future. He believes his parents were not attacked randomly and this haunts him, he isn't sure if he should be a monk or not, and finally he cannot figure out how Evelyn fits into his future.

This book has a decent ending with a setup for another novel. I enjoyed the mysticism of the Chinese culture that Jade Lee uses to give us glimpses into Jacob's life. His character was deep but Evelyn's character needed some more history and spark. She doesn't come alive until the second half of the novel whereas Jacob is interesting on page one.

Combining many headline cases in one book is always a plus and the length of each story is about right. Maybe just a few too many toward the end but read in bunches informative and entertaining. Not sure when published but some chapters seemed to lack updates. All in All though a very readable book.

Laying It On
By Conrad J. Obregon
No photographer can unleash the full power of Photoshop to make an image look like the photographer's vision without understanding the power of layers. (At the very least layers allow the Photoshop user to make selective adjustments to an image, without actually changing the underlying data.) Yet many Photoshop books treat layers in bits and pieces rather than as an integrated whole so that the photographer has a hard time grasping the overall concept. That's where a book aimed solely at layers comes in.

Matt Kloskowski's book deals with all the major applications of layers. The subjects include the nature of layers, blending layers, adjustment layers, layer masks, type and shape layers, enhancing and adjusting photos with layers, layer styles and smart layers. It's all here, but in a short simple quick form. (I'm sure there are more esoteric things to learn about layers; at least one pair of authors has a book on layers that is over 750 pages long!) Most photographers will find that this book has all they need to know about the subject.

The author's text takes the form of tutorials. One can either download files for these tutorials or work with one's own pictures. The tutorials are short, well illustrated and have plenty of white space. If you make a mistake at an early step you won't have to backtrack through twenty or thirty steps to find out where you went wrong. Even if you work out each tutorial, this book will not take more than ten or twenty hours to complete, and it will teach you almost everything you need to know about the subject. Along the way, Kloskowski teaches the reader about other Photoshop tools, as when he integrates a discussion of gradients into a lesson on blend modes, or deals with selections in a tutorial on layer masks.

The author has an easy-going, breezy, humorous style, but those put off by the style of his mentor, Scott Kelby, probably will not be offended here.

Normally, as I go through a book, I make notes in the margin when I discover an error. I'm happy to report that I made no notes in the margin of this book.

For experienced Photoshop users this book will contain nothing new. Perhaps they'll have to look at the 750 page tomes. However, for the photographer who doesn't have a firm grip on the use of layers in Photoshop, this book will help him or her to master the subject.

A terrific jump start to learning layers!
By John H. Swarce
I'll be honest, Photoshop has scared me to death for quite awhile. I love digital photography, but I always felt the whole post-processing end of it was way too complicated and would take me years to learn. A friend of mine would take photos that I had taken and work his PS magic on them, and I would thank him, not really knowing what he did to correct exposure, color, etc. I picked up Photoshop Elements 6, but I still never really understood the whole layers and masks thing, although I loved the editing aspects of it.

But then I saw an episode of PhotoshopUser TV on the web and was introduced to some of the tips, tricks and new features of Photoshop CS5. All of it explained in detail, with some good doses of humor thrown in, by Matt Kloskowski, Scott Kelby and Dave Cross. They made Photoshop less intimidating and much easier to comprehend.

So I got a copy of Photoshop CS5 for myself, determined to learn this program and start using it to its potential. I was all set to purchase the first edition of Matt's Layers book, but he mentioned that he was revising it with new emphasis on CS5, so I decided to wait and get the newest edition.

Matt has a great style of teaching the use of layers in Photoshop. Another reviewer mentioned that Matt wrote in a "juvenile" style, but I found it refreshing and helped make what can be a dry subject interesting. Watching Matt on the web, or attending one of his seminars, will show you that he writes as he speaks. He doesn't talk down to his audience and makes sure you know the subject matter before he moves on. Several times in the book, while demonstrating a process or procedure, he will instruct you to perform a basic step (whether it's a keyboard shortcut or navigating to a certain toolbar) that he talked about in an earlier chapter, that helps to complete the current project. This is just a simple repetition technique that makes those steps come naturally to you.

The book is logically set up to start off a new user with the basics of layers, and quickly moves into blending layers and the use of layer masks to enhance your images. The book is NOT a Photoshop tutorial showing you what every brush or menu option does. Matt assumes you have a good base of knowledge on how to navigate around the program toolbars and menus. He gives you a good foundation of knowledge in the early chapters that he builds upon as you go through the book.

New to this edition is the "Advanced Layer Blending and Compositing" chapter that Matt has added for this edition. Again, while this is about more advanced techniques, Matt makes it easy to understand, and most of all, fun to learn!

In addition to the information in the book, there is a web link given where there are more video tutorials and pictures that you can download, so you can work on them alongside the turorials in the book.

Overall, I would strongly recommend this book for the person just starting out in Photoshop and who wants to understand how layers are the building blocks of all images that are edited in it. As with any book, some of the more advanced users may not get a lot of new information out of it, but there may be a new tip or trick that they might have not have come across before.

Great purchase!

A great book for advanced Photoshop idiots like me!
By Toni Bennett
I'm one of those Photoshop users who knows too much to want to read a book mainly for beginners, not because of ego considerations but because I would be bored and skip around. But there are also huge gaps in my haphazard Photoshop education. This book gives absolute beginners what they need without slowing down the more experienced user. It's long enough to cover what it aims out to cover without being so long that you look at it and say, someday I'm going to go through that book but not today.

I was attracted to this book because of who wrote it (I watch Matt's Killer Photoshop and Lightroom tips all the time), the topic, which of course is central to knowing Photoshop, and because of the great cover. I'm a small press publisher and believe me, covers matter. Many good books languish because they don't appeal initially to the eye. And a Photoshop book should have a good design. It's also well-edited, a welcome plus in today's publishing world.

Anyway, what's between the covers is just as delightful. I think the word I would use to best describe this book is methodical but not in a boring way. It's comprehensive, but the way it's laid out never overwhelms you. I know that when I go through this book a couple of times, I'm going to be flipping my way through layers like a maniac but a maniac who knows what she's doing and knows what layers can do for her.

And, I LOVE the last page of each chapter, the "How do I...." question and answers. It gives me one place to go to immediately find all those absolutely essential shortcuts and critical pieces of knowledge without which one wouldn't really be able to say they had a good basic understanding of layers.

Matt even has two companion videos on the book's web site and you can download all the images used in the tutorials there as well.

I may not be an expert in Photoshop (yet) but I do consider myself an expert on Photoshop books and this one is well worth the very reasonable price. Have fun playing with it; I am!

4.5 stars overall
By A Page With A View
NO MAJOR SPOILERS!
This series means SO much to me, but that doesn't mean I'm going to treat it any differently than other books I review honestly. I really didn't think I would give this more than 4 stars until the end totally changed everyyyyyything.

First off, I would absolutely recommend reading The Assassin's Blade before this book if you haven't already! Most characters and locations from those novellas appear here.

The story starts out with Aelin and her court heading north to Terrasen where they meet with a few potential supporters at an inn before trying to waltz into Orynth. Aelin is told that the Lords of Terrasen don't recognize her as queen and it’s all very infuriating. She swears that "no matter how far I go, no matter the cost, when you call for my aid, I will come. I'm going to call in old debts and promises. To raise an army of assassins and thieves and exiles and commoners.” Because war/annihilation is coming and Erawan is not messing around.

So it's kind of like the breaking of the Fellowship in Lord of the Rings with how characters gets scattered around on various missions and eventually come back together. And speaking of LOTR... you know how while everyone freaking walked across Middle Earth the story kind of meandered yet wasn't necessarily boring because the locations sounded pretty, little bits of action popped up here and there, and the characters were so wonderful that you'd be fine reading about them watching paint dry? The middle of this book reminded me of that.

A surprising portion of this story is carried by the POVs of other characters instead of Aelin. That decision makes total sense in the end, but I was initially wondering why I wasn't connecting with her as much as I had in previous books. She spends most of the story making her own secret plans behind the scenes while everyone calls her out on not clueing them in until the continual big reveals. Seeing her through other characters often made her seem a bit distant, callous, not focused on the bigger picture, and pretty much back to her Celaena persona. But by the end it all makes sense and she was still the incredibly brave, determined, selfless, AMAZING character I love. She gets even more complex and mature in this story and her whole journey is perfect.

So that decision to make the development of so many crucial plot points happen off-screen (off-page??) made the reveal at the end more emotional, but also made me kind of frustrated in the middle with how I couldn't get a strong sense of where on earth Aelin’s head was or where the plot was even going. And because we didn't get such a strong look into Aelin's mind, her relationship with Rowan didn't have much emotional impact for me. I love them both as individual characters and do care about them together, but I'm just not as invested as I wanted to be. So I did enjoy this book overall, but wasn’t super emotionally attached like I was in Heir or Fire or flipping through the pages in a panic like I was in Queen of Shadows.

BUT THE CHARACTERS ARE SO AMAZING. All of them. They’ve all grown so much since the first book!!! I said in my reviews of previous books that I wanted to see more of Manon, Aedion, and Elide and I was not let down. The amount of character deveopment that secondary characters get here is AMAZING. So, so, so wonderful. If you thought my love for Manon was intense before, get ready for a whole new level. Her scenes had some of the best action and emotions in the entire book and I was fangirling so much.

Even though my biggest ship sadly did not sail in this book, I still loved where the those characters went. It was just fun to see how everything wove together. And I liked Elide in Queen of Shadows, but can we talk about how she becomes the most amazing & tough character ever here?!! She is SO cool and totally surprised me. Her POV and everything that happened in it was the most unexpected part of the book (and also maybe the best).

This book felt a lot like a chess board… it strengthens every player and moves them into the right position before the final battle of the next book. So it might not be the most gripping story as a whole, but it did an amazing job of building an impressive lineup of characters. Like I NEVER expected to care this much about Lorcan?! I loved how the most unexpected characters paired up for different missions or whatever and how everyone’s different stories wove together at the end! And Maeve just got bumped up past Umbridge level of loathing.

I just love Manon, Elide, Aedion, Lysandra, Dorian… oh my goodness HOW HAVE I NOT TALKED ABOUT DORIAN YET. It made me so happy every time he was referred to as “king” and I love how he’s getting more complex after everything he’s been through. He’s still so adorable. It did irritate me a bit how he’s also an equal king, but Aelin was running the show and kind of ignoring her friend. BUT there was a lot to cover here so I just hope he’s utilized more in the next book.

But seriously, the sheer scope of the worldbuilding in this series is phenomenal. I really can’t think of many other worlds I love this much… I mean, there are demon kings, Fae, witches & wyverns, pirate lords, princes, kingdoms & castles, magic, spirits with cryptic advice, swords & battles, ancient prophecies, politics, well-developed history & religion, multiple complex villains, and it spans all of these continents and cultures. THIS IS EVERYTHING I LOVE.

Now I know that a ton of people were losing their minds over the sex scenes in this book before it was even released, so let me just take a minute to weigh in on that. The main thing I heard about this book was that it was graphic and unnecessary. I’m pretty sure the people calling it graphic didn’t read ACOMAF. (See my review of ACOMAF in response to adults who say it's not for teens). The scenes in this book were tamer and felt like Maas tried to be descriptive, yet still vague with a younger audience in mind? So it mostly ended up being rather awkward… which brings me to the unnecessary point. I’m not against these scenes, but also didn’t really need them in the end. I was either laughing at parts or rolling my eyes at how pretty much everyone turned into a hormonal teenager. It just didn’t fit the tone and honestly felt forced into the story in several places? I defended ACOMAF because the plot built up to those scenes and it meant something in the story, buuuuut I’m really not feeling that here. I honestly would have liked to see the page time used elsewhere…

There are a lot of things I wanted to see happen that didn’t, but I was equally thrilled with where the story ended up going in the end. I think a lot of fans need to acknowledge that even though we’re super wrapped up in this world, it’s not our story to direct. If you need it to go in an alternate direction, maybe go read some fanfiction.

And I adore Chaol, but honestly think cutting him out of this particular book was a really smart move. Based on where his mindset was in Queen of Shadows, he needs time to grapple with who he is and what he wants to do. The tone of his POV would’ve been seriously disconnected from the rest of this story both mentally and distance-wise (like he’s in an entirely different part of the world and wouldn’t have worked into the larger plot). I think it’s enough for the sake of pacing to know what he’s doing without actually having to see it. He’s still awesome and he’ll be back…

Also, I don’t know why Maas said fans would hate her after this book because that ending was AMAZING. (Not amazing in that I particularly enjoy what’s happening, but amazing in that this takes the story to a whole new level of intense. I don’t know if I’d go back and reread this whole story like I usually want to do right after I finish a ToG book, but I’m totally going back to that last 15%.

So even though I connected more with other books in the series, I’d still give it 4.5 stars overall for all of the strong characters and how brilliantly it set up everything. It's possible I was a bit tired or just had too many expectations while reading because the longer that I spend typing this, the more I love the book. There were SO many amazing scenes. And the ending was emotional, but I’m not the wreck I expected to be because I’m mostly too excited at how awesome the next book could be now!

what they look like, what they sound like
By David Maldonado
I want you to stop for a moment and think about all the characters within the Throne of Glass series, how you perceived them, what they look like, what they sound like, and the decisions they are known to make. Now, throw all of what you know into a blender. Close the lid. Press down on the go button and turn the nozzle all the way up to its highest level. What you are left with is a nourishing and new delightful new dish that our minds weren't ready for. Sarah J Maas turns everything upside down in Empire of Storms, her 5th installment in the series, which has us all scrambling for more immediately.

Maas brilliantly makes each of her characters into something they weren't before. They all develop organically into new people, but these new developments make perfect sense. For example, Aelin begins the book heading North of Terrasen in order to help build herself an army. She finds that the people are not so inclined to back her up, considering she's been gone for over 10 years, but was actually always present with her sworn enemy, the late King of Adarlan, playing as his puppet assassin as Cealena Sardothien. Many don't take too kindly to her history, and many of those that she encounters find more reasons to not back her up, than to do so.

Based on the Aelin we've grown to know, we would think she would blow up into a vengeful tirade, spewing her new found power of fire, stopping close but short of a tyrant. However, that Aelin is not there. She's become ever more calculating, less hot-headed, and deathly more focused on saving her people and land. She not only fights two wars against both the Dark King Erawan and her Aunt Meave, Queen of the Fae, she does more than crosses blades in these wars. She uses her mind as well as her muscle in order to produce an end result she wants. From page one until the very end result, Aelin orchestrated EVERYTHING. It's that type of sleight of hand intellectual reflex that has me blown away with her character growth.

Prince Rowan, once sworn to Queen Mauve, now sworn to Aelin, serves his Queen in every way possible. When we first met him in Heir of Fire he was disassocitive, broody, and not the most likeable character. Aelin has helped to transform him into something more vulnerable, to the point where he will freely show some PDA with Aelin in front of others. While some of his old cadre (old Fae friends/associates sworn to Mauve) would see this as a weakness, this is in fact far from the truth. Prince Rowan will stop at nothing to protect Aelin, even if it means protecting her from herself. He's still a fierce fighter, but now, he has a worthy cause to fight for---a future with his Queen.

Aedion goes through some pretty hefty transformations that mainly deal with things that come out from the plot itself. I won't discuss everything, but Aedion grows to accept who his parents are and what that means. He's every bit as fierce as Aelin can be, and he becomes one of her most loyal soldiers. He also finds a budding romance with a shapeshifter by name of Lysandra. Their relationship was very sensitive, on account of Lysandra's history. She has been defiled by many men, and Aedion is very cautious with her at first, as he should be. Lysandra was a very refreshing character to read about. Her ability to transform into almost anything was pretty epic. Lysandra's fight sequences were some of the best of the series, and she reminded me of a mini Aelin. She's also completely devoted to Aelin, almost to a fault. It's a magical experience to see such a fierce and brutal character, rife with molestation, loss of power, and a dehumanizing childhood, turn into a character that is able to finally allow love to blossom.

King Dorian has the biggest transformation in the entire series. A fair warning to those about to read Empire of Storms, this will not be the same character you grew to love. His innocence is gone. His power is his own. The killing of his father by his own hand, seeing the love of his life Sorscha murdered because of his father, and the months of being held hostage inside his body by a Valg Prince has changed Dorian forever. He is darker, less talkative, and more of a man of action. He has become sadistic and this leads him to a very surprising romance (although I approve) with Manon of Blackbeak. He's become as cold as the ice he wields, and he has now become a force to be reckoned with along side Aelin. He is after all, the King of Andarlan. King Dorian begins to realize the position he is now in, and you see him push his weight around when you least expect it. However, he's very quiet during heightened situations, especially when it comes to plotting along side the other characters. You knew when he decided to speak, his words would change the dynamic. I'm not sure if I personally love his more sadistic side, what I do love is that he recognizes his power. I look forward to seeing how he'll wield it in the future.

Lorcan, another Fae male that's apart of the cadre. Also, the same person who Aelin and Rowan tricked at the end of Queen of Shadows into thinking he took one of the wyrdkeys from them for his Queen. He's known as the Fae male who trained Rowan into what he is now. He's a character filled with vengeful hate, and it becomes amplified 100 fold when he realizes that he was tricked. However, a long his journey he meets Elide who is also on the run. Manon helped her escape her uncle and the tower she was held captive in, and now Lorcan and Elide travel together. To be brief, Elide melts away the ice around his heart, and helps to provide him with a worthier reason to fight. Their romance was the one that had me the most excited, because it really did feel like it was straight out of Beauty and the Beast.

Manon of Blackbeak has the most intense storyline out of them all. I fell in love with her since she was first introduce, and this new installment has just solidified that. Monon, still ever fierce, but we see some major things happen to her. I don't want to give anything away, however I will say that Manon has always known that something wasn't "right" with how her people were living. Some secrets are revealed, some major ties are cut, and we find Manon no longer in a position of power. Until...that is...when she crosses paths with Aelin again.

They're plenty of other characters I can discuss but these are the ones that had the most affect on me. Empire of Storms exceeded my expectations with every aspect of the book. It had the perfect dialogue, right amount of plot twists, and pages upon pages of cinematic fights. The ending will leave you in pieces, as I'm still trying to find all of the pieces of myself. Consider this book a rollercoaster, which has a long death drop and it keeps on dropping even as you turn to the last page. I still haven't reach the bottom yet. And yet, I know I won't until the next book comes out. Sarah J Maas has just written the best in her series, possibly even the best book of her career. Do check it out!

Happy Reading!

WOW!
By Booklover
Wow. Just wow. That's all I can really say. Like many fans, I waited the whole year for this book to come out and I was not disappointed. Aelin is really starting to come into her own power, abilities, and strategies. But I have to say, the thing I loved the most about this book was the relationships. Maas has really given everyone someone in this book - practically no one is left out of a little love - though, there are a couple relationships that are left with some serious unresolved issues that I am sure will be handled in the next book. Also, no spoilers here, but Maas better find a different way to end this series than the way it hinted at the end of the book with the final reveal. We don't need more main characters becoming martyrs and leaving their true loves high and dry. Nope. I am all about that happily ever after. So it would be great if Maas figures out a way to make that happen, asap.

Things you should know about this book:
1) Contains a cliffhanger, or two, or three - lets just say practically everyone is left hanging off a cliff in this book
2) Contains sex - though I thought it was tastefully done and overdue
3) Contains a whole bunch of Aelin not telling anyone anything until the last moment - that girl needs to work on her communication skills
4) Shows the point of view from: Aelin, Rowan, Aedion, Lysandra, Elide, Lorcan, Manon, and Dorian

Overall, I really enjoyed this book. I think it may be one of the best ones yet in the series, although I'm sure the final book will blow our minds out of the water. Happy reading!!!

Review
“In portraying his old friends with both their flaws and their virtues, regarding them not as heroes or villains or competitors but talented colleagues, he gives us the best ‘album’ I know of the literary figures of the twenties. He does not attempt to do full-scale portraits of them, any more than he does of himself but sharp, deft sketches that convey a real sense of the person.” —The Atlantic

About the Author
John Roderigo Dos Passos (1896–1970) was a writer, painter, and political activist. He wrote over forty books, including plays, poetry, novels, biographies, histories, and memoirs. He crafted over four hundred drawings, watercolors, and other artworks.

Dos Passos considered himself foremost a writer of contemporary chronicles. He preferred the moniker of “chronicler” because he was happiest working at the edge of fiction and nonfiction.

Both genres benefited from his mastery of observation—his “camera eye”—and his sense of historical context. Dos Passos sought to ground fiction in historic detail and working-class, realistic dialogue. He invented a multimedia format of songs, newsreels, biographies, third-person fictional narrative, and first-person semi-autobiographical narrative snapshots to convey the frenzy of America’s industrialism and urbanism in the twentieth century. His most memorable fiction—Three Soldiers (1921), Manhattan Transfer (1925), and the U.S.A. trilogy (1938)—possesses the authority of history and the allure of myth. Likewise, he sought to vitalize nonfiction history and reportage with the colors, sounds, and smells documented on his journeys across the globe.

A stellar memoir by a key member of the Lost Generation. Well worth the investment.
By Scott J. Rossi
I purchased my copy of "The Best Times" by the great writer, John Dos Passos, last year, and it lived up to my expectations, and even exceeded them. John Dos Passos was a fixture of the Lost Generation and had close ties to his counterparts, Ernest Hemingway and F. Scott Fitzgerald and his wife Zelda. Through the power of his talent to write Dos Passos brings these great friends of his to life, and takes the readers of this book on a journey through the times he lived in. He speaks of his very first meeting with Hemingway, Scott and Zelda, and speaks with how his friendship with Hemingway came apart because as he put it they grew up by their thirties and in the process grew apart. Surprisingly these two great writers who were once best friends in life managed to correspond and stay in touch over the years, and they never lost their love and admiration or each other. Like Hemingway, Dos Passos was a world traveler, and you will enjoy his trips to Europe and later to Spain, and he brings his destinations and its people to life for his readers. I highly recommend this book. It serves as a nice counterpart to Hemingway's own memoir, "A Moveable Feast".

By Shawn Sudia-Skehan
I have always admired this author's work; reading this memoir made me respect and admire him as a man. His experiences during war were cool and clear which suggests that he had to distance himself from them in order to deal with them. The evolution of his friendships with Fitzgerald, Hemingway, the Murphys was fascinating - I just wish he could have invested his memories with a wee bit more feeling.

Informative and Readable
By Marie
The text is essential for any ESL or ELL instructor. The concepts detailed within are foundational to any consideration of assessment and the examples provided enable the reader to better envision the practical application of assessment methods in the classroom. Although assessment is perhaps not the most exciting topic, it is the basis of responsive and effective language instruction. The text is surprisingly readable and accessible as compared to other texts on this topic which I have read. It's really written for the instructor or lay person whereas other texts I've encountered seem geared toward researchers or doctoral students.

Not much to say about it. it provides a basic overview to language assessment. Basic tools, methods, term definitions. A great starting point for anyone new to language assessment or to test writing in general. I feel that a lot of what is in this book can be applied to other subjects as well.

Low Power Digital CMOS Design, by Anantha P. Chandrakasan, Robert W. Brodersen

Power consumption has become a major design consideration for battery-operated, portable systems as well as high-performance, desktop systems. Strict limitations on power dissipation must be met by the designer while still meeting ever higher computational requirements. A comprehensive approach is thus required at all levels of system design, ranging from algorithms and architectures to the logic styles and the underlying technology.
Potentially one of the most important techniques involves combining architecture optimization with voltage scaling, allowing a trade-off between silicon area and low-power operation. Architectural optimization enables supply voltages of the order of 1 V using standard CMOS technology. Several techniques can also be used to minimize the switched capacitance, including representation, optimizing signal correlations, minimizing spurious transitions, optimizing sequencing of operations, activity-driven power down, etc. The high- efficiency of DC-DC converter circuitry required for efficient, low-voltage and low-current level operation is described by Stratakos, Sullivan and Sanders. The application of various low-power techniques to a chip set for multimedia applications shows that orders-of-magnitude reduction in power consumption is possible.
The book also features an analysis by Professor Meindl of the fundamental limits of power consumption achievable at all levels of the design hierarchy. Svensson, of ISI, describes emerging adiabatic switching techniques that can break the CV2f barrier and reduce the energy per computation at a fixed voltage. Srivastava, of AT&T, presents the application of aggressive shut-down techniques to microprocessor applications.

Yikes! Are there any real engineers out there?
By A Customer
Chandrakasan is unfortunately a member of the large group of academics who make a career out of publishing articles and books, despite not understanding much of their subject matter. This book's contents are either trivial (the benefits of voltage scaling and minimization of switched capacitance), incorrect, or have been well known and applied for years (for example, by Swiss CMOS watch designers). As a working engineer in the field, I find this book practically offensive.
