About the Author

Eric Chaisson holds a doctorate in astrophysics from Harvard University, where he spent 10 years on the faculty of Arts and Sciences. For more than two decades thereafter, he served on the senior science staff at the Space Telescope Science Institute and held various professorships at Johns Hopkins and Tufts universities. He is now back at Harvard, where he teaches and conducts research at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics. Eric has written 12 books on astronomy and has published nearly 200 scientific papers in professional journals.

 

Steve McMillan holds a bachelor’s and master’s degree in mathematics from Cambridge University and a doctorate in astronomy from Harvard University. He held postdoctoral positions at the University of Illinois and Northwestern University, where he continued his research in theoretical astrophysics, star clusters, and high-performance computing. Steve is currently Distinguished Professor of Physics at Drexel University and a frequent visiting researcher at Princeton’s Institute for Advanced Study and Leiden University. He has published more than 100 articles and scientific papers in professional journals.

Very readable and enjoyable... Hope hospitals "get it" before I need one as a patient!

I "read" the audio version... very well done. Well written, just the right mix of theory and stories, and for the audio version, the reader was excellent.

And I find this book hopeful... as a physician with 30+ years in medicine, I have a grave fear of the time when I become a ward of the medical-industrial complex. In general, it is not patient-centric, nor in some cases, imbued with much common sense. This is a sad reality. This book won't fix all that ails us, but the ideas presented, and the spirit contained therein, are a great start.

A decent reading of an important book (for Hospital Executives)

This book is getting a little long in the tooth now...but if you're a hospital exec looking to get a better handle on your customer satisfaction / net promotor scores, it is essential in my opinion. It's a great reminder of the "early days" of customer sat in healthcare, and really sets the groundwork for things like Value Based Purchasing.

The book is a good read, easy and fast. It is written in a conversational tone and gives great, specific examples. It can be ACTED UPON quickly. I enjoy reading it.

However, I'm now finding that it's easier for me to "read" business books via audiobook. Great way to spend my time in the car. The conversational tone of this book really lends itself to the audio format. The narrator is the author, Fred Lee. He's good at conveying the meaning of his book and overall is good. Occasionally, he trips over words and his voice is not exactly "radio star" quality. And the music that leads in and out of each chapter is AWFUL. But these are minor complaints compared to the value I get from having these discs.

The audience for this product is tiny...but if you're in that audience, you NEED this (either CDs, book or both). It's time well-spent helping to refocus on what TRULY makes your customers (patients) loyal and satisfied.

Thought provoking, but leaves readers in the "how trap" the closing pages warn of

This is a great book for anyone in a service industry to read. It's thought provoking and clearly organized with a number of illustrative examples and stories. The writing is by no means literary, but it is not poorly written. It has real substance which sets it apart from many similar books. Although the vignette in each chapter are helpful, at times they are verbose and so numerous as to obscure the central teaching of any given chapter. The book would be better if the "human interest stories" were cut back significantly.

The substance/rules/"things" are really tools for thinking about the problems you face when running a hospital and striving for service excellence, rather than implementable solutions to those problems. This is both the book's greatest strength and greatest weakness. The author closes by cautioning readers not to fall into the "great ideas but how do I implement them" trap. This is sophomoric. Although no reasonable reader will expect tailor made solutions, trimming the gratuitous congratulatory mentions of various nurse managers and spending more time on the details underlying their success would have been helpful.

Bottom Line: Good use of money and time, would recommend.

I was disappointed with this book. I didn't really like the overall tone of it and I didn't like how it was organized. It seemed like every other page mentioned vocabulary that wasn't defined until later chapters, which made it a bit confusing and harder to understand. I'm sure you can find a better ECG textbook than this one.

Easy read and great pictures

This book is an easy read and has great pictures. In my EKG class the teacher just reads powerpoints with photocopied pictures of rhythm strips; so basicly we are learning on our own from this book. I would recommend it to anyone who is taking an EKG class or nursing students (as I am) who want to get a head start on learning to read monitors. Very helpful!

Hardly half-an-hors-d-oeuvres worth...

+ I know this is only supposed to be a beginner's introduction to the work of a notoriously difficult thinker, but this is No-cal Foucault Lite, the rice-cake of primers, so airy its hardly there at all.

+ First thing I'd like to know is who is the author? I mean, I see her name on the book but darned if I could find a bio or any credentials for her listed in the book. I'd like to think she had some...credentials, I mean...and wasn't just a hungry freelance writer with no special knowledge of Foucault who offered to pen a Foucault guide on the quick.

+ Because that's pretty much what this book reads like.

+ Well, whoever the author is, she seemed to resent that Foucault, being gay, didn't have enough to say explicitly about women and she felt compelled to point that out in annoying and unnecessary introjections throughout the text.

+ Do not pay the cover price for this book. It's simply not worth it. You could read it in the bookstore while your kid is enjoying Waldo Storytime or whatever in the children's section. Or pick it up, used, for a dollar somewhere. I'd say this is the rule of thumb with any of these "for beginner's" guides, but especially so in this case.

+ In fact, you likely could garner as much information about Foucault reading the back covers of his books--maybe even more.

+ The more of this review I write the more I realize how poor this book was and how dissatisfied I was with it. It's losing stars faster than a wax museum on fire. I can't truthfully say that it was a waste of time to read, because it hardly took any time at all to read. But if I opened the book knowing one scintilla's worth of knowledge of Foucault I closed it hardly knowing one-thousandth of a micron more.

+ In other words, I'm pretty much just as stupid as I was before which made reading this book kind of pointless.

Yes, It Really Is For Beginners

This is by far the best intro to Foucault I've read. Thinking like Foucault use lots of complex language and have really complex ideas, but this book explains those ideas in a very easy-to-understand way. It's short, so you'll be finished quickly, but you will get a really good (introductory) sense of Foucault's entire project. That sense will stick with you pretty well, too, because every page is illustrated. This is an important thinker, and I can't imagine a better introduction. Read it.

Interesting Simple Intro

As a beginner, the book presents Foucault as a documenter - discussing and disecting the history of power and professional relations. He covers knowledge and power, sexuality, prisons, mental health.... The span is enormous, highlighting Foucault's multidisciplinary reputation.

The downside of the book (indeed a limit of the Manga-like series) is it spends too much time on Foucault's role as as a chronicler of data, and leaves the reader on their own for much of his conclusions. An example: the book talks of Foucault's description of the medical clinic and doctor's "Gaze" but the book doesn't share if Foucault thought this was good or bad. Given Foucault's well deserved reputation as a complicated writer, this beginner could use the help.

There are letters to his long-suffering wife, written from gambling spas where he acted out his obsession like a character from one of his novels. After years of ducking his creditors by living in Europe, where his frustrations spilled over into tirades against the West, the novelist returned to St. Petersburg and met with success. As editor and sole contributor to a monthly journal of opinion, he became a public figure, and the letters reveal how the themes of The Brothers Karamazov first crystallized in his monthly. This collection, drawn from the four-volume, definitive Russian edition, offers the fullest selection of Dostoyevsky's correspondence available in English. Frank is author of a widely acclaimed, multivolume biography of Dostoyevsky, and the late Goldstein wrote Dostoyevsky and the Jews.

This is the largest selection to date of Dostoyevsky's letters in English and a valuable resource for scholars and admirers of his fiction who don't read Russian. Unlike the leisured reflections of more sheltered authors, these letters were written in life-blood. They run the gamut: early success; prison and exile for "political" activity; epilepsy, gambling fever, and persistent debt; religious fervor and prejudice; unhappy liaisons and the loving sensuality of Dostoyevsky's second marriage; the popular acclaim of his late years. Frank's succinct introduction sets Dostoyevsky's life (1821-1881) in the context of the times, and the footnotes point to many important connections between his letters and his art. Mary F. This is an excellent selection of Dostoevsky's letters that show how great a writer and man he was. The compassion that developed in him and the faith in his abilities despite the terrible suffering he endured is a lesson in forebearance and inspiration to all. More than anything it shows the creative process involved which is so vital a part of being an artist: a human being interacting with the world for better or worse. Something those obsessed with all forms of literay theory should note and absorb as a tonic to get them out of their stupor.
