Not so in-depth

"Office 2010 In Depth" is my second "In Depth" book from the series by Que Publishing. My initial impression is that while "Excel 2010 In Depth" (the first "In Depth" book I read) errs on the side of assuming the reader has certain knowledge, this volume errs on the side of the reader having very little knowledge. So while waiting to go "beyond the basics...beneath the surface" as the series' tagline states, the reader is instructed on how to do rudimentary tasks like highlight text selections and how to enter data into a cell. As an everyday Office user, I really didn't find much here that I didn't already know which was disappointing. Now this isn't to say the book is a total loss for someone already familiar with Microsoft Office.

For someone moving to 2010 from 2003, Chapter 1 touches on the new features and even discusses the process of upgrading (though I suspect most people reading the book have already done so) while Chapter 2 moves into navigating the ribbon. Chapter 5 discusses the new Office Web Apps. Having reading "Using Office Web Apps" by Paul McFedries, I can tell you that author Joe Habraken tells you here about all you need to know in 27 pages.

For the most part the book is logically organized with the basic commands and most popular Office programs first, though Access is a puzzling omission from the book. There are lots of screenshots, though not enough "after" shots of the technique being discussed. I think readers would benefit from more glimpses of the finished product rather than pictures of the menu locations. And there are LOTS of photos of menus.

I think Habraken did a nice job explaining the different chart types in Excel with brief explanations of when you might use each. He also did a great job of explaining PivotTables. I thought the PowerPoint chapter was also especially well done. Finally, I applaud the inclusion of OneNote in the book - a program many - including myself - are not terribly familiar with.

For someone moving to the ribbon for the first time or looking to move beyond the most basic functions of Office, I think Habraken has created a reference book that will help them move up. For those like myself who are already comfortable with the new interface and are intermediate-to-advanced users, I'm not sure they're going to get a lot of mileage out of this book aside from a nugget here or there.

Very useful: describes a lot of functions I didn't know exist

Half of learning to do something more efficiently is knowing what tools you have to work with. Office is so powerful a program, having a book that covers all the features is invaluable. This book is about 2 inches thick and covers everything including the kitchen sink. A great resource.

I have been trying to streamline what I do at work for about 6 months now. One task in particular has been a pet project of mine to streamline. It typically takes 5-6 hours to put together, and lot of it is repetitive. I sicced our IT guys on coming up with a program or other way to steamline it. Nothing. I have talked to the word-processing folks, who had some useful ideas, which gave me one solution, but the solution is not very user friendly. But it did cut the 5 hour project down to about 1 hour. I figured there has got to be yet a better way.

I nabbed this book and borrowed a host of other books from my library. This one mentions more features per program than the other books I have used. Largely, I am interested in Word, but for a comprehensive manual, it covers Word better than some of the Word-specific manuals do. This one goes in depth into various features and has given me a third solution to accomplish what I want. Some of other books didn't even mention it, or only in passing as too complicated to cover in their book. I now have the 5 hour task cut down to about 20 minutes. That's what computers are all about, and I couldn't have gotten there without this book.

Office 2010 In Depth sits on my desk and is definitely my go-to manual for all things Office.

Solid but dry reading

The good: This book is comprehensive, well organized, and full of information that will help someone upgrading from Office 2007 to Office 2010 get up to speed quickly on the changes to Office. It will also serve as a resource for resolving specific issues that crop up from time to time (e.g. how do I convert a file type again?) while using Office 2010. The author includes useful tips based on his own experiences, such as the use of Quick Steps in Outlook to streamline often-used commands. All of the Office applications are covered here, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Publisher, and OneNote. The Table of Contents and Index are complete and easy to use. New features, such as Excel Sparklines (small charts inserted in a worksheet), are covered in detail and their advantages highlighted. Even heavy Office users will get some utility from the detailed descriptions of the more advanced tools, such as Excel PivotTable/PowerPivot and Office macros.

The bad: This is not the book to review without a cup of coffee or other caffeinated beverage in hand - he doesn't use humor, graphics, or engaging examples, and it is lengthy (almost 1000 pages!). If you are upgrading from Office 2003 or earlier to Office 2010, this book may not be for you. The author assumes that the reader is familiar with the new Office "ribbon" that first appeared in Office 2007 that organizes commands in a completely different manner than in pre-2007 versions, so there's not much sympathy for those (like me) who suffer daily bouts of frustration in not being able to find commands that are no longer where they are "supposed to be". In fact, his tone and the book's content are decidedly "pro-ribbon", in that he presents all of the wonderful improvements of Office 2010 without describing workarounds or acknowledging the drawbacks to the ribbon.

Good read!

This is not a book that is to be read as short stories, as it is full of factual opinions, proven truths, dated discoveries, etc. Each chapter covers one society or location, each chapter filled with facts and theories as to what may or could have occurred. Some of these civilizations have left clues behind to help us begin to figure out what happened, while others have left nothing at all for us to follow. It was truly interesting to read about cultures and societies that we know about through various means that disappeared without a record of why.

I found that the author had done his research, the book was enjoyable and informative and it was a great learning experience, which was a good thing.

Honestly upon reading and after reading this book I have little doubt as the authenticity of the write-ups inside. But granted that all the details and information inside are correct then I am happy having this one. The intention of the author is really great of sharing his knowledge to the readers.

Understanding the Future, by Studying the Past!

"Lost Civilizations" is an exceptionally well written and organized book. The author has the ability to transfix the reader with excitement and awe regarding the level of advancement and sophistication of the host of lost civilizations that have been discovered and studied, and his belief that there are many more left to be discovered. Many people I know are under the impression that ancient cultures were primitive, violent, disease ridden, with people that were primitive, ignorant savages living in caves or hovels, when nothing could be further from the truth. The more you study the ancients you realize that our ancestors either developed or had access to technologies that rival and in some cases surpass those of today. The more I study the history of our ancient ancestors the more I find startling similaritis between them and us. It is like a chain that link us, a chain forged by hopes, dreams, courage, hard work, ambition, spirituality, love, a desire for a better tomorrow for their children, in a word they are us. The more we study the past, read books like that of Mr. Phillips, I believe that we will better understand ourselves, how to improve our world. **WARNING!! This review WILL contain spoilers from the first book in the Keaton Series, AWAY. You MUST read Away before picking up STAY. You have been warned. **

I honestly do not even know where to begin with this review. I read Away shortly after it was released and while Jason and Cassandra were falling in love, I was falling in love with B.a. Wolfe’s writing. Her ability to create a scene is something else. Every time I read it, I was transported to Keaton and into this world that she created. I could feel every emotion and visualize every image. Then, B.a. did the unthinkable…the unimaginable. She killed off the main character. I will forever remember sitting in my bed at 3 am, doing the ugly cry, and throwing my kindle down on the bed in a huff. My husband gave up trying to figure out why I was so upset.  I was devastated that not only was it over with Jason and Cassie, but he was gone; ripped away from her. After everything she had lost, she continued to lose more. I was so angry!! I knew there would be a sequel, but I was devastated that Cassandra wasn’t getting her happily ever after, and wasn’t even sure I wanted to read it.

“Just breathe, baby. I’ve got you”

The ending of Away sucked…there is no other way to put it. But, when people say there is a reason for everything, believe them. Jason had to die so we could meet Aidan. Oh, Aidan. Sweet, sexy,  swoon-worthy Aidan. Aidan is Jason’s brother and a bit of a mystery during the events of Away. We know he left home shortly after Jason revealed how sick he was.  We know that the Bradley’s do not like to talk about him, or really even acknowledge that he is a part of their lives. We are about to get all the answers however, and get to the bottom of why he left and what his future holds now that his brother is gone.

Cassandra is barely holding on. Jason’s death has ROCKED her. She knows she has to keep it together, if not for her, then for Jase, her beautiful baby boy. Jason’s best friend Moose, and Cassie’s best friend Mel, help Cassandra to keep moving forward. As they approach the one-year anniversary of Jason’s passing, Cassie plans to return to Keaton, a place she has avoided for the entire year, honor Jason’s memory, and hope to reconnect with Jason’s parents. Cassie has no idea what awaits her in Keaton or that her one, true love is waiting in the wings.

“I need a sign. Please, just send me a sign.” The last of my tears trickled down, collecting on the ground. “I love you, Jase. Green light forever."

Cassandra is about to get her sign. Jason asks Aidan (or Dan as he is also called), to watch out for Cassie. He needs Aidan to keep an eye on her and protect her. Aidan does that through Moose, until he accidentally bumps into Cassie. He knows who she is, but she has no idea she is staring at Jason’s estranged brother. All Cassie knows is the intense pull she feels towards him. She has felt virtually nothing since losing Jason and for the first time in a year, she is feeling a whole lot of something.

Aidan can no longer maintain the secret of his connection to Jason, when Cassie and Aidan meet at the Bradley’s house. Cassie feels betrayed and hurt that Aidan didn’t tell her who he was, but the pull that keeps dragging Cassie and Aidan together is entirely too strong for either of them to deny. Cassie thinks it’s wrong for her to have feelings for Aidan. She refuses to be disloyal to Jason that way. Thankfully, Aidan refuses to give up on them. He will be strong for both of them if he needs to be.  Aidan realizes their relationship is a bit unconventional, but that doesn’t make it any less right, and he will fight for the right to call her his.

“And I know you feel it too, Cassie. I know you do. I can see it in your eyes. It’s not right in so many ways and I know that too. But in so many ways it’s more right that I’ve ever felt in my entire life.”

I am going to be honest here. This book was TORTURE! Absolute TORTURE. It was a beautiful type of torture, but torture nonetheless. After the gut wrenching, heartbreaking ending to Away, I honestly expected Cassandra to catch a break. Clearly, B.a didn’t think Cassie had endured enough anguish and suffering in her life and thought she should have to undergo more. I cannot tell you how many times I cried in this book. It felt as if I was crying every 10 pages. I am not a crier. I have said over and over how much it takes for a story to make me cry. I’ve seen it all, and you better bring it if you want to affect me in that way. Well, B.a. took that challenge and ran with it. It brought new meaning to the quote, “If you want the rainbow, you have to put up with the rain.” There were so many gorgeous moments of love and growth in this book. Cassandra works hard to pull out of the darkness she found herself in after Jason’s death. She realized all she needed to do was reach for Aidan’s hand and he would help guide her out. Their love story is not without more than their fair share of bumps in the road, but I am happy to say my kindle, along with a box of tissues, remained firmly in hand.

“I’ll be your X’s and O’s,” I whispered into her ear.
She released a soft breath as she nuzzled against my cheek.
“And I’ll be yours.”

Another Amazing Story!! One of the best books of 2014!!

I was lucky enough to have beta read this story. I absolutely fell in love with the author's writing after reading her first novel, Away. I thought that nothing could top that story and boy, I was wrong!! Stay brings the tears, drama, heat, and overall experience to a whole new level.

Now, we first meet Cassie, who's living life after the sudden death of Jase. It's one year later and she's making her way through life, hanging on by mere shreds of hope. After an unexpected run in with a handsome stranger, she feels her body come back to life. Who was this man she bumped into? She couldn't get him out of her mind and she had the tiniest inclination that somehow she met him before. It's so hard not to say too much because I don't want to give anything away. All I can say is this book is freaking awesome!! BA Wolfe has done it again! I am not a crier and OH-EM-GEE!! I bawled and bawled like a brand new baby!

I read this book months ago and as I type this review, I can still feel the emotions that I experienced while reading it. Talk about a serious BOOK HANGOVER!! This story has it all; love, romance, drama, some HOT lovin', and most of all; HOPE. Hope, that even when you're in the dumps, after your first love passes away, there's still that everlasting love that is waiting for you.

And as you read this story, be prepared. Tissues Required. Gut-wrenching, heart warming, kindle throwing events will occur.

I cannot wait for the next installment of the series. I'm so excited for MOOOOOSSEEE!!!!

Congratulations to BA Wolfe for another phenomenal read that will go down as one the "Best Books of 2014" on my list. You rocked it girl!!!

Unacceptable errors

I have been using the Arban book since the beginning of high school and was thrilled to see a new edition boasting clean engraving. This new edition spreads out the exercises so they are easier to read. It is truly impossible to describe how great this is unless you see it.

HOWEVER...

This book is riddled with errors! I couldn't believe it and neither could my university's trumpet instructor. At first it was one error, which was fine. By the end on one lesson we had noticed dozens of errors. This is completely unacceptable, especially considering this method book is the absolute standard for Trumpet and they are boasting brand-new editors.

Some examples (Pages and numbers are from old Arban):

Pg. 151. #60: This exercise is in E minor yet the new edition puts the key signature are D minor while all the note placements stay the same! This ends up changing many of the accidentals in the exercise making most of the diminished 7th chords incorrect.

Pg 150. #58: 10th measure from the end the last eight note is incorrectly printed as a "C" instead of a "D." Several accidentals are either missing or flat out incorrect.

These are just a few of the examples I have found. I have emailed Carl Fischer, the publisher, to add to the list of errors that have admitted to already receiving. I have been informed that they plan to reprint the book there is just no timeframe yet. Until there is a reprint,

This is a great new printing of Arban's

This new edition of Arban's has been completely re-engraved so the printing is all clear, easy to read, and pieces that had been crammed onto a single page in the original (which is still sold by Carl Fischer!) printing are now spread out over 2 pages! The examples on the CD are a great teaching tool, as are the accompaniments which are recorded, and the inclusion of the original remarks is a great historical artifact. The only downside, as with the "original" version that Carl Fischer still sells (the one with the red cover), is that it has a "perfect" binding (that's where they use glue to hold the pages in and the binding is flat). I have no idea why that's called a "perfect" binding because it is definitely NOT perfect for a musician since the book doesn't lie open on the stand very easily. I found a solution to such problems, though - I bring perfect-bound books to my locally owned copy shop (not Kinko's or FedEx or Staples) and have them convert it to a coil binding. For $3 they slice off the "perfect" binding's spine, then use a machine to drill all the holes and then put in a plastic-coated coil, and now the book really is perfect! This is a welcome addition to the trumpet student (of all ability levels) library.

Can't argue with Arban

This is, of course, a paperback, and very thick, with a glued binding.

Do yourself a favor and take the book to the nearest FedEx/Kinkos. For less than $5 they will slice off the binding and bind it with a plastic spiral so it will lay flat. You will need a sturdy music stand to hold the thing, but you can then put the whole book flat and play directly out of it.

About the Author
Steve joined Brighton from the University of Liverpool where he was part of the management group of Impacts 08, the research programme designed to assess the social, cultural and economic impacts of European Capital of Culture. Perhaps the most bizarre experience of his academic career was presenting the proposal for Impacts 08 to a panel chaired by Loyd Grossman.

Steve previously worked at Northumbria University where he was Head of Research for the Centre for Cultural Policy and Management and where he conducted a large-scale research project into the impact of cultural investment on Newcastle Gateshead Quayside. Many years previously Steve undertook his PhD in the Behavioural Sciences Department at the University of Huddersfield in which he was concerned with the relationship between consumption and identity amongst young people.
