Board Pearls

This do-it as you go along book is essential for everyone taking the ABIM clinical cardiac EP boards. Additionally it is a great refresher and reminder for careful analysis of intracardiac electrograms. Some important concepts are emphasized which are important for both boards and clincal practice. It has some classic tracings and perhaps some not so common events. It could use more emphasis on atrial fibrillation.I am sure the next edition which is being currently revised will demonstrate that. Layout to present electrograms can be slightly better by using vertical flip over spiral bound manual versus turning the pages. Overall great bang for the buck!!

What a great read and insight on the greatness of the New England Patriots

This is really a great read. I flew through it. As a Patriot fan it's incredibly interesting to get such insight of Bill and the organization. It's fun to read about all of these coaches now and how the patriots own the coaching landscape with all coaches coming from Bills cabinet. It's also extremely interesting to read the player profiles and what the coaches and Bill thought of certain players. Some of the players they were so highly on are all time patriot greats. The book is a good look back on the early history of Krafts Patriots and the first two super bowls. As a patriots fan now, it was fun to read about some of the players that have become patriot legends that were merely just players who the patriots and Bill thought would become great. Bill is a great coach and Holley does a great job at actually bringing the patriot fan, or even just a football fan, even closer to what makes Bill so successful. An easy but really fun read. Before you know it I had finished the book and was left pleased and thankful for Bill and the success of the patriots. FREE BRADY

An Enlightening Look into the World of Pro Football

I am neither a Patriots fan nor a Bill Belichick fan. But, because of this book, I have an immense amount of respect for the organization and the man. My favorite parts of the book are when Michael Holley, the author, goes into detail about game plan and scouting strategy. Here's one example.

When the Patriots played the Rams in the 2002 SuperBowl, they were expected to get steam-rolled, especially since the Rams had blown them out earlier in the season. As Holley explains, Belichick's strategy in the first game had been to do everything possible to pressure the Rams QB, Kurt Warner. It didn't work, and Warner picked the Patriots defense apart rather easily. Before the SuperBowl, Belichick began thinking that maybe the real key to containing the "greatest show on turf" was to disrupt Faulk, not Warner. So, instead of having his d-linemen and linebackers go all out after Warner, Belichick instructed them (over and over again) to first hit Faulk (if he was in the vicinity) in the backfield and then rush. Also, Belichick and his staff told them never to assume that Faulk was staying home to block--it was always a decoy. The Patriots were also taught that the Rams never run the same play out of the same formation. Even if it looks like the same play they saw 15 minutes ago, it's not. The strategy worked, and Belichick's defensive genius trumped the offensive genius of Mike Martz as the Pats won their first SuperBowl.

Holley also does a good job of describing Belichick's desire and tendency to challenge commonly held (but not well though-out) football assumptions. During the 2002 post-Championship season, the Patriots were right around .500 and playing poorly. At one point, one of the Patriot players told a reporter that the team's problem was that they had lost their swagger. When Belichick read about this, he went berserk. In an intense, profanity-filled speech (common with Belichick) given during a team meeting, he let them know that the reason they won so much last season was not because of any swagger, but because they played smart, disciplined football, and did not deviate from the assignments they had been given. Belichick challenges the goofy cliches that you hear from the ESPN, Fox and CBS pre-game guys.

One word of warning to unsuspecting dads or moms: I wouldn't let my kids read this because it is filled with profanity. It is difficult for Belichick (and many of his coaches and players) to get through a sentence without using the f-word, and Holley doesn't edit their words.

With regard to the substance of the book, my only complaint is that I wish Holley had devoted even more time to specific plays, coverages, schemes, etc. But that's a minor gripe. Overall, I really enjoyed this book and I suspect that anyone who is football fan will also find it to be an enlightening and entertaining read.

Since the last edition, transmission electron microscopy has undergone a rapid evolution. The introduction of monochromators and - proved energy ?lters has allowed electron energy-loss spectra with an energy resolution down to about 0.1 eV to be obtained, and aberration correctors are now available that push the point-to-point resolution limit down below 0.1 nm. After the untimely death of Ludwig Reimer, Dr. Koelsch from Springer- Verlag asked me if I would be willing to prepare a new edition of the book. As it had served me as a reference for more than 20 years, I agreed without hesitation. Distinct from more specialized books on speci?c topics and from books intended for classroom teaching, the Reimer book starts with the basic principles and gives a broad survey of the state-of-the-art methods, comp- mented by a list of references to allow the reader to ?nd further details in the literature. The main objective of this revised edition was therefore to include the new developments but leave the character of the book intact. The presentation of the material follows the format of the previous e- tion as outlined in the preface to that volume, which immediately follows. A few derivations have been modi?ed to correspond more closely to modern textbooks on quantum mechanics, scattering theory, or solid state physics.

Transmission Electron Microscopy: Physics of Image Formation presents the theory of image and contrast formation, and the analytical modes in transmission electron microscopy. The principles of particle and wave optics of electrons are described. Electron-specimen interactions are discussed for evaluating the theory of scattering and phase contrast. Also discussed are the kinematical and dynamical theories of electron diffraction and their applications for crystal-structure analysis and imaging of lattices and their defects. X-ray microanalysis and electron energy-loss spectroscopy are treated as analytical methods. Specimen damage and contamination by electron irradiation limits the resolution for biological and some inorganic specimens. This fifth edition includes discussion of recent progress, especially in the area of aberration correction and energy filtering; moreover, the topics introduced in the fourth edition have been updated.

Transmission Electron Microscopy: Physics of Image Formation is written for scientists and application engineers in fields such as physics, chemistry, mineralogy, materials science and biology. About the Author

Ben G. Streetman is Dean Emeritus of the College of Engineering at The University of Texas at Austin. He is an Emeritus Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering, where he held the Dula D. Cockrell Centennial Chair. He was the founding Director of the Microelectronics Research Center (1984—96). His teaching and research interests involve semiconductor materials and devices. After receiving a Ph.D. from The University of Texas at Austin (1966) he was on the faculty (1966–1982) of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He returned to The University of Texas at Austin in 1982. His honors include the Education Medal of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), the Frederick Emmons Terman Medal of the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE), and the Heinrich Welker Medal from the International Conference on Compound Semiconductors. He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He is a Fellow of the IEEE and the Electrochemical Society. He has been honored as a Distinguished Alumnus of The University of Texas at Austin and as a Distinguished Graduate of the UT College of Engineering. He has received the General Dynamics Award for Excellence in Engineering Teaching, and was honored by the Parents’ Association as a Teaching Fellow for outstanding teaching of undergraduates. He has served on numerous panels and committees in industry and government, and several corporate boards. He has published more than 290 articles in the technical literature. Thirty five students of Electrical and Computer Engineering have received their Ph.D. under his supervision.

Sanjay Kumar Banerjee is the Cockrell Chair Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering, and Director of the Microelectronics Research Center at The University of Texas at Austin. He has more than 900 archival refereed publications and conference papers, 30 U.S. patents, and has supervised 50 Ph.D. students. His honors include the NSF Presidential Young Investigator Award (1988), ECS Callinan Award (2003) and IEEE Grove Award (2014). He is a Fellow of IEEE, APS and AAAS.

This book is absolutely useless. The material is written in such a way that you'd have to reread it at least 10 more times before you had a slight understanding of what was talked about. Some sections of the chapters even leave out material that you'd need to know to do later chapter problems... I used this textbook in my Solid State Electronic Devices course and it didn't help one bit.

The way that the author wrote the book is like talking in his head! He's not trying to elaborate or explain the material in a fluent and easy way. Wikipedia is way better than this book!

Gerard Manley Hopkins is one of English poetry's most brilliant stylistic innovators, and one of the most distinguished poets of any age. However, during his lifetime he was known not as a poet but as a Jesuit priest, and his faith was essential to his work. His writings combine an intense feeling for nature with an ecstatic awareness of its divine origins, most remarkably expressed in his magnificent and highly original 'sprung rhythm.'This collection contains not only all of Hopkins’ significant poetry, but also selections from his journals, sermons, and letters, all chosen for their spiritual guidance and insight. Hopkins didn't allow the publication of most of his poems during his lifetime, so his genius was not appreciated until after his death. Now, more than a hundred years later, his words are still a source of inspiration and sheer infectious joy in the radiance of God's creation.

Deep in Genuine, Devoted Faith and Rich Writing

Hopkins is one of those poets hidden from so many because of his subject matter, yet is considered one of the most influential Victorian poets for his use of word combinations, meter and image.
Added to the delicious and poignant poetry is the contemplative nature of his prose and poetry. In it, you'll read about his humility and submission to God, his genuine faith, his desire that his poetry exalt God and not Hopkins himself.
Most his work was published posthumously, as late as 1920 or so, and immediately influenced the likes of T.S. Elliot (AKA, the guy who wrote the poem "Cats" is based on and "Wasteland") and his contemporaries.
While Whitman and Wilde were exalting in themselves, and just after Emerson and Thoreau were helping us see creation, Hopkins demonstrated prowess in pointing readers to see the Creator in the creation.
Atheists won't agree with him, of course, but he says it so well, they will at least go, "Hmm... if I believed, I could see that... yeah, wow, well put." The Catholics will cheer him on, "Atta boy... yep, that guy's a Jesuit!" Not undone are the Protestants who will be so impressed in agreement they'll be happy he was a Christian.

Those accents are in the original.
Delicious to say aloud? You should hear the second verse. His others are as tasty.

"The dearest freshness deep down things"

Hopkins did not create an enormous body of work, but what he did create was some of the most intensely powerful poetry English Literature has known. They are all here in this volume, poems such as " Thou art indeed, just" " Felix Randal, the Farrier",

" Carrion Comfort" " Binsey Populars" " God's Grandeur". Hopkins whose masterfully original descriptions of the natural world are second to none was one of the great innovators in the history of English verse. His development of the concept of 'sprung rhythm' return to the system of emphasizing the 'stresses' in verse is the key to this.

Hopkins tormented soul , his contention with his own despair are present in his most beautiful and moving poems.

A thoughtfully arranged collection.

Gerard Manley Hopkins explores his intuition, doubts and counters it with theology, only to find himself in a place of despair at the end of the process. Yet, I cannot read a Hopkins poem without feeling a resonance within myself, as I recognize truth and beauty. He shouts at the heaven's, and embraces the questions that keep him up at night. Tensions often seem high, as with "Thou Art Indeed Just," or "Nondum." The man pours himself straight out into his verse.

Just as Hopkins wrestles with the nature of God, so must a reader wrestle with this verse. There are instances when the poetry will open itself easily to interpretation, but most often his wordplay produces poems that are dense, and so loaded with implicit imagery that untangling takes time which many are unwilling to give. The first time I happened upon "That Nature is a Heraclitean Fire," I was tempted to think Hopkins may have treated poetry more like an obsessive game with himself than a literary outlet. (If you've never read it, take a break to google it - you'll understand).

This collection, however, brings the works together into a wholly realistic format; they are not haphazardly assembled. It begins with some of his most well-known and treasured poems, like "The Caged Skylark" and "God's Grandeur." They are short and rich and accessible. These are then followed by a couple longer pieces. The poems continue in this sort of cycle - about six to ten easier poems followed by some more challenging works. It makes for a controlled flow, and prepares you for Hopkins' most ambitious poems, which are located at the end of the verse section.

On top of that, the cloth bound hard cover looks great with a sharp jacket to boot. This book is worth every penny! (Though I would suggest searching the used listings, as you can often find one in great condition for very cheap).
