About the Author
Dr. Ranu Jung is the Wallace H. Coulter Eminent Scholars Chair of Biomedical Engineering at Florida International University, where her research concerns neural engineering and computational neuroscience. Dr. Dieter Jaeger is Professor in the Department of Biology at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. His research examines how neurons in the basal ganglia and in the cerebellum process their inputs, in order to understand the motor function of basal ganglia and cerebellar networks.

This is the best single stand alone reference concerning the mathematical and statistical modeling of neural systems and neurobiology. The book has a prestigious authorship in an A-Z format. The references, diagrams, in color photos, and formulae are complete. Nuclei, dendrites, single neuron and populational neuronal units are carefully discussed. The illustrations are one of the best aspects of this 3500 page tome.

Auditory, visual, somatosensory, motor, and, association systems are a good part of the discussion here. The balance of vestibular and proprioceptive models are discussed and their relationship to the afferent and efferent populations included.

Biophysics of single neurons is described with relationship to ion channel mechanics also. The Nernst-Planck and Hodgkin Huxley models are treated with respect. Bayesian, thermodynamic, and physical theories are applied in a multidimensional manner. I think this is a tribute to the excellent editorship here. Models of the basal ganglia, hippocampus, primary visual cortex, and thalamus are discussed with the Watson & Crick theories covered. David Marr’s vision theories are also discussed. Circuit analysis is complete here. Working and practical models of memory and hearing devoted to their own specific chapters.

The physics of cerebrovascular blood flow and metabolism is a devoted to separate sections of the book’s chapters. Imaging techniques and wiring diagram explanations are an excellent presentation throughout the books.

The book should help all students and senior investigators alike. I endorse the science of this outstanding reference.

Histology Book

The shipper was very prompt and packaged the item very well. This book has lots of useful information that is not covered in the general histology technical manuals. All glossy pages with wonderful color pictures. It reviews all aspects of histology to include; general, special stains, immunohistochemistry, embedding, cutting, cytology, electron microscopy, transmission microscopy and immunoflourescent techniques. My only complaint it that is expensive for a book that is five years old.

Great resource!! but slight lack in essentially details.

This is the book of books for histologists... a virtual bible for the histotechnologist. The book covers everything from laboratory management, fixation (theoretical and practical aspects), sectioning, staining, and an overall and detailed view of histology and immunohistochemistry. However, I found some sections to be more as summaries rather than desciptions. By that I mean, for instance the microtomy section (which deals with problems and solutions to those problems while sectioning) lacks the details needed to correctly resolve a situation unless you are already a trained histologist. I would recommend maybe adding more information with diagrams of the microtome, blade angles and the difference changing such angles would make (something that would be found in a BOR study guide or more like the microscopy section - Chapter 4 that perfectly diagrams and depicts all aspects of microscopy very well). Also, the recipes for some stains... unless someone was a trained histologist, some the solutions may be difficult to make up from the way they are worded (i.e. amyloid (Congo Red) solution saturated in 80% alcohol ... back of book tells what saturation point for Congo Red is in water but not alcohol... simple explanation within recipe itself would help making up such stains easier, I believe.

These diaries reveal the essential Kafka behind the enigmatic artist. A Writer's Writer

Franz Kafka's diaries were never meant to be published. Yet his diaries are spread across the internet, the actual published diaries translated into many languages and countless printings. These dairies are very personal, and the gentle Prague Jew would certainly be appalled.

Why do we continue to find these writings so fascinating?

Well, simply, they're terribly honest. Kafka never meant for these diary entries to be published, let alone read by another person. For those interested in the mechanics and soul of writing, Kafka's diaries are a source of true wonder. A confessional of a gentle soul, a man trapped in an insurance job, staying up through the night writing his heart-out, his thoughts, pains and acute observations of a time on the brink of great and terrible change, the death and cruelty of two world wars.

When reading Kafka, there is an overwhelming darkness, loneliness, a strong shadow that continually hovered around him, a "something" he tried to rid himself of through intense self reflection, which the reader of these diaries will discover.

Kafka's life story is, for the most part, a tragedy. A painful experience as one, sometimes, can feel his self consciousness, that subtle pain at the back of the neck, when, you know, you're being stared at...and his continued bad health.

I've attempted to read Kafka's diaries many times, and only now, for some reason, can withstand the pain of his perceptions, his precarious relationship with his father, and the few women he loved and the true love he never married.

Kafka is a man that loved writing for writing's sake, an artist who experimented daily, till dawn most nights, to pick up his little brief case and begin his work as an insurance lawyer in a semi-official insurance institute.

A strange yet moving entry:

21 February 1911

I live my life here as if I were entirely certain of a second life, as if for example I had entirely gotten over the failed time spent in Paris, since I will strive to return soon. Connected to this, the sight of the sharply divided light and shadow on the street paving.

For a moment I felt myself covered in armour.

How distant, for example, are the muscles of my arms

Kafka's writing was for the act itself without pretension or grandious dreams, (though his success during his 40 year lifetime was no disappointment) an act of instinct, pure and natural. Kafka is the true writer's writer.

A fantastic insight into this man's life

This book is one that I pick at after I read a particularly nice short story by Kafka. Of course, since these are his diaries, these are not plot driven. But plots are not the only reason one might read a text. These are his raw insights that he never thought would be read by other humans. He had given explicit instructions to his closest friend to have his diaries and several of his unfinished manuscripts destroyed after his death. Now, realistically, if he actually wanted them destroyed, he would have done so himself--so this leaves one to speculate. Regardless, the entries provide a remarkable insight into the mind of a man who lived a very dreary life and experienced mostly angst and sorrow.
