About the Author

She is the Roger S. Berlind Distinguished Professor of the Humanities at Princeton University and has been a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters since 1978.

Blonde: an honest view of a life

I was never a Marilyn Monroe fan. I would never even watch a movie of hers. I didn't want to jump on what I thought was a bandwagon of people who loved her because she was so tragic. I was never interested in the dumb blonde sexpot thing. I've always preferred the more exotic Joan Crawford or Rita Hayworth. I knew Monroe's story but it never became personal for me. It never spoke to me.

Oates' words spoke to me. I have a love/hate relationship with her work. I like it but it often annoys me. I also said the first couple of pages had me thinking I'd never get through the book. Well, after that I never wanted to put it down. I was totally engrossed for all 738 pages. I often read several books at once. In this case, I wasn't interested in reading books that I had just gotten in from my favorite authors. There was just no comparison.

Oates breaks some "rules". She throws in dialogue imagined and real. Sometimes, you're not sure who the story teller is. You have to "listen" as it unfolds. Sometimes, the story is told as poetry. Sometimes a chapter is a page long. A great thing about this is... she doesn't do anything to the point where it's annoying. For example, sentences without verbs--which I always notice and it personally drives me nuts. She does it sometimes, but not on every page. She does it enough that it's needed and not jarring.

If Oates wants you to feel like the character-- frightened, sad, confused, numb, glad, she weaves her words so that the experience of reading enables that feeling. You don't just view it as an outsider, you are a participant.

I could relate to the character personally. I understand being smart and wanting to be smarter and reading all you can to know as much as everyone else but always feeling inferior, always sounding like the airhead. I can grasp that, hold it in my hand and KNOW that experience. I understand being able to read philosophers and have great opinions but never being able to verbally express myself about any of it in any kind of coherent manner.

Also, she portrays Monroe as multidimensional. Lost people often don't know who they are. None of us are always one thing, are we? We are often contradictions of ourselves.

I always thought Monroe played herself. I didn't consider that maybe the dumb blonde was a brilliant talent, something she gave them, almost like a joke or a slap in the face. I also understand being able to use that, to fool people with it, allowing it to be an advantage and then being able to offer a beautiful surprise for anyone who is special, more deserving.

I've ordered all of Monroe's movies. I've got some catching up to do.

I HIGHLY recommend this book.

Applause! Standing Ovation! Whistle!

I come to you PURE. A reader of Joyce Carol Oates, but never a reader of any biography pertaining to Marilyn Monroe.

I enjoy reading a book review that gets to the heart of the matter. The heart of Joyce Carol Oate's marvelous novel is Norma Jeane Baker and the wonderful illusion that she created for all to enjoy, Marilyn Monroe. If you're like me and never read a biography on the illustrious Marilyn Monroe, start with this novel. The author does an amazing job of making it appear factual and breathing life into both Norma Jeane and her good friend Marilyn.

JCO starts with a BANG! beginning when Norma Jeane was a little girl in the care of her grandmother, Della. Poor Norma Jeane is whisked away from Della by her mother, Gladys, then her life sort of goes to pieces. Gladys and Norma shared a few good times or at least that's how Norma Jeane tries to keep to the story so that she can survive her life but eventually Norma ends up in the orphanage and then at around age 12 or so, becomes a foster child of a pathetic couple, only then to find herself a child bride and then the novel really takes off! All that I've said is far condensed; JCO does a much better job of filling you in on the details, and there are many!

I was sad, fascinated and impressed by Norma Jeane's talents and I'm not talking about the gifts she was naturally blessed with, though she was quite blessed and certainly used it all to her advantage. What really stood out in the book was that Norma Jeane was intelligent, shrewd, witty, a genius in her own right, yet, she couldn't see it. She knew it lived inside of her but she didn't believe that other people knew it, so tormented was she. Becoming Marilyn Monroe could be such a tough job, a job that Norma wanted to abandon, but it would be hard to fight the force that she, herself had masterminded. Many times, Norma Jeane Baker would lose herself and live Marilyn's life when the film wasn't rolling. She'd self-medicate and drink and pop more pills and do acts that were expected of Marilyn that even Marilyn didn't have to do, but such the poeple pleaser was Marilyn, she'd do the deeds anyway, no matter how self-destructive. My head would spin at times and I felt that I was popping pills, probably JCO's intention. Sometimes, I became Norma's husbands (Bucky, Ex-Athlete and Playwright) and I was exasperated with her self-loathing and neediness, not thinking, but then thinking, hey, this woman has a problem.

Other times, I became her co-stars and wanted to quit the films because I just couldn't take Marilyn or Norma Jeane's self-indulgences, her sickness! Despite it all, I continued to turn those pages. I was committed to Norma's and Marilyn's world, JCO's intention, I'm sure. Then, I thought: Where is JCO's National Book Award for this exceptional piece of work that must have made her half crazy to write. Where was the award? I had to research who won that year, making a promise to read the winner and find out WHY JCO did not get the prize for this novel, that to date, as far as I'm concerned, is her masterpiece.

Thanks to JCO, I've viewed many a Marilyn Monroe movie and I've got a couple of biographies lined up- but I thank her for sharing the secret. When I watch Marilyn Monroe, I smile, knowing that I'm really watching Norma Jeane, the Creator.

This heartbreaker of a book

Marilyn Monroe died when I was in my late teens. It has always intrigued me why her legend lives on and on in a world where beautiful blondes are as plentiful and ephemeral as butterflies. What was it about Marilyn Monroe that has inspired the books, the songs, the photographic retrospectives decades after she's been gone? Having just finished "Blonde" by Joyce Carol Oates, I think I know.
From her first to her last breath, the fictionalized life of Norma Jeane Baker exudes tragedy. Her childhood is brutal, puberty puts her at risk, her early marriage is a fiasco, her treatment by her agent, her photographer, and the studio bosses unpardonably exploitive. When she finally achieves fame, Norma Jeane is too fragile and broken to savor it. She becomes her insecurities. Even those who love her and wish her well (husband playwright Arthur Miller) can't save her. She can only bring them down in her self destructive nose dive. If there is any truth to her treatment by President John Kennedy, he was the most dispicable of all. Oates never uses the image of a candle in the wind made famous by Elton John, but the metaphor works. Norma Jeane, aka Marilyn Monroe, never ceases to be a fascinating case study. Towards the end the writing gets a little sloppy and the reader grows impatient for the author to get on with the end, which one knows will be horrible, and yet when it happens it will break your heart . You are sorry the book has ended because you can never get too much of the central character, her amazing life story and the stormy times in which she lived.

Accustomed to the orderly and uneventful life in the ant hole, all the ants enter the bizarre world of a kitchen in the search for sugar crystals for the queen. Two greedy ants stay behind in the sugar bowl, eating their fill and then falling asleep. Their slumbers end when a giant scoop drops them into a sea of boiling brown coffee. Further mishaps include a heated stay in the toaster, a hazardous swirl in the garbage disposal and a zap in an electrical outlet. When the ant troops return, the two bad ants gladly rejoin their friends and head for the safety of home. In this work, the hazards of nonconformity are clear. The narration has the feel of early newsreels where the broadcaster described unknown phenomena in clipped, clinical language: "A strange force passed through the wet ants. They were stunned senseless and blown out of the holes like bullets from a gun." The resilient ants and the eerie landscapes are portrayed in strong black-and-white images, enriched by deep brown, purple, slate, gold and steely blue colors; Van Allsburg, playing with perspective, creates marvelous contrasts and images. But although Two Bad Ants is visually different from its predecessors, it shares the same strong style, dazzling artwork and whimsy that characterizes all of the artist's work. Ages 3-8.

Grade 1-5 In this brief tale of the adventures of two runaway ants, Van Allsburg once again gives children a visual puzzle to solvein this case identifying common household appliances from an ant's point of view. When a troop of ants are sent to retrieve sugar crystals from a kitchen, two ants stay behind to feast and go to sleep in the sugar bowl. When morning comes they are successively stirred into a cup of coffee, almost swallowed, toasted with an english muffin, whirled through a garbage disposal, and stunned senseless in an electrical outlet. While some children will enjoy identifying the highly magnified objects, others will wonder how the ants have managed to survive any one of these disasters. The truants return home in one piece, and the last few lines supply a pallid and oddly moralistic conclusion to the story. The book is a visual tour-de-force. The highly linear, hard-edged drawings look like fine etchings which have been magnifieda technique which enhances the sense of being reduced to ant size. The colors applied in flat fields are primarily limited to earth tones and gray, combined with touches of pure white and black in lines and fields of almost luminous intensity. The intensity of the visual experience overpowers the story, which is a flat, rather cold vehicle, an excuse for a visual game which will appeal to the intellect of children older than typical picture book readers. Perfect.

My great nephew is 7 years old and his class at school has a secret reader which is a students relative. I knew a few months ahead of time I would be the secret reader for April 11, 2013. I search on line for a great book and the title of the book caught my eye. I read the other reviews and it sounded perfect for his 1st grade class.

It was a hit the children in his class were very tentative with every word I read they loved the book from cover to cover. It was just perfect. It made my day that they were so pleased and my
great nephew just loved it. He was squarming in his seat with excitement waiting to see what was going to happen to the Two Bad Ants.

Striking artwork, captivating story

First, the organization that shipped is top-notch--timely, everything in great condition.
Second, I pull this book out whenever ants appear in our classroom, once or twice a year. It's a good reminder to clean up after ourselves carefully (not just because an adult requested!). This book also offers a lovely way to consider perspective. Children spontaneously suggested what they thought the moral of the story might be, even though a moral is not emphasized in the book. It's a favorite... children love to hear it more than once.

Of course this is FIVE Stars

Never read Mary Poppins as a child. Decided to read Life of PL Travers and all of Mary Poppins afetr seeing movie, "Saving Mr. Banks". You would have to be an enthusiast to recommend the Life of PL Travers, but even as an adult, I enjoyed the Complete Mary Poppins Colletion. Wish I had read it to my kids when they were young!

I remember these books as a child and wanted to read them again.
In the very first book, there is now an edited version of Michael's Bad Day -- why would an original story be edited? It may not be PC, and many books of the era contained things we now consider offensive - but why edit the original story and not even make reference to the editing? In my opinion, the new version is done very poorly. If you know the story, the edit is glaring and definitely not PL Travers-like.

Be wary of Harpercollins 'Complete' collection, which omits most illustrations

1. 'Mary Poppins - the Complete Collection' from Harpercollins Childs omits most of the delightful illustrations by Mary Shepard! Those few illustrations which are included are reproduced as tiny postage-stamp-size chapter-opening vignettes, apparently in imitation of the lucrative Harry Potter books; Shepard's pieces are meant to be seen as full-page illustrations, so at this tiny size they look more like smudges.

2. Though this edition is billed as 'The Complete Collection,' it omits 'Mary Poppins from A to Z' and 'Mary Poppins in the Kitchen.'

3. The physical book and layout are ugly and ungainly. The entire book is double-spaced, making it very hard to read. This edition seems as though it was designed by someone who likes looking at books, but not actually reading them.

4. The production is ghastly - I've barely touched the book, and already the back cover is peeling off, showing blank white cardboard beneath.

5. This edition includes an introduction by Cameron Mackintosh which is only 2 pages long, followed by a biography of Mackintosh that takes up an entire page! It just feels like the final straw making this whole mess extremely unfriendly to readers.

Save your pennies for the individual volumes, or the 'Mary Poppins: 80th Anniversary Collection' omnibus, which is well-designed, easy to read and includes all of Mary Shepard's wonderful illustrations at full-size!

Dr. Ranu Jung is the Wallace H. Coulter Eminent Scholars Chair of Biomedical Engineering at Florida International University, where her research concerns neural engineering and computational neuroscience. Dr. Dieter Jaeger is Professor in the Department of Biology at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. His research examines how neurons in the basal ganglia and in the cerebellum process their inputs, in order to understand the motor function of basal ganglia and cerebellar networks.

This is the best single stand alone reference concerning the mathematical and statistical modeling of neural systems and neurobiology. The book has a prestigious authorship in an A-Z format. The references, diagrams, in color photos, and formulae are complete. Nuclei, dendrites, single neuron and populational neuronal units are carefully discussed. The illustrations are one of the best aspects of this 3500 page tome.

Auditory, visual, somatosensory, motor, and, association systems are a good part of the discussion here. The balance of vestibular and proprioceptive models are discussed and their relationship to the afferent and efferent populations included.

Biophysics of single neurons is described with relationship to ion channel mechanics also. The Nernst-Planck and Hodgkin Huxley models are treated with respect. Bayesian, thermodynamic, and physical theories are applied in a multidimensional manner. I think this is a tribute to the excellent editorship here. Models of the basal ganglia, hippocampus, primary visual cortex, and thalamus are discussed with the Watson & Crick theories covered. David Marr’s vision theories are also discussed. Circuit analysis is complete here. Working and practical models of memory and hearing devoted to their own specific chapters.

The physics of cerebrovascular blood flow and metabolism is a devoted to separate sections of the book’s chapters. Imaging techniques and wiring diagram explanations are an excellent presentation throughout the books.

The book should help all students and senior investigators alike. I endorse the science of this outstanding reference.

Histology Book

The shipper was very prompt and packaged the item very well. This book has lots of useful information that is not covered in the general histology technical manuals. All glossy pages with wonderful color pictures. It reviews all aspects of histology to include; general, special stains, immunohistochemistry, embedding, cutting, cytology, electron microscopy, transmission microscopy and immunoflourescent techniques. My only complaint it that is expensive for a book that is five years old.

Great resource!! but slight lack in essentially details.

This is the book of books for histologists... a virtual bible for the histotechnologist. The book covers everything from laboratory management, fixation (theoretical and practical aspects), sectioning, staining, and an overall and detailed view of histology and immunohistochemistry. However, I found some sections to be more as summaries rather than desciptions. By that I mean, for instance the microtomy section (which deals with problems and solutions to those problems while sectioning) lacks the details needed to correctly resolve a situation unless you are already a trained histologist. I would recommend maybe adding more information with diagrams of the microtome, blade angles and the difference changing such angles would make (something that would be found in a BOR study guide or more like the microscopy section - Chapter 4 that perfectly diagrams and depicts all aspects of microscopy very well). Also, the recipes for some stains... unless someone was a trained histologist, some the solutions may be difficult to make up from the way they are worded (i.e. amyloid (Congo Red) solution saturated in 80% alcohol ... back of book tells what saturation point for Congo Red is in water but not alcohol... simple explanation within recipe itself would help making up such stains easier, I believe.
