Let's read this book in 3 years

Fintech is moving very fast, change is coming our way and bankers need to act bold. Bold is also evolving, fast. This books brings the principles of how finance will be disruptive, anyone within the financial industry should read this and realize than 3 years from now banking will be very different, maybe even faster than that. This is happening everywhere, this is not a developed economy theme. "Revolutionary knowledge", should become the path for everyone in an industry that is yet to be disruptive .. Finance is one of them, good book.. @jorge_a_ruiz

A changing financial world

This is a great book that attempts to explain what is going on with the banking industry, banking customer behavior and technology changes. These topics are explained very well and to bankers and banking staff they could difficult to understand. The biggest impact will be to the banking industry. Unfortunately, the quagmire the industry is in will be difficult to navigate through this quagmire and it will have major turmoil to the various organizations.

Ok but...

There are many good points covered in this book but I feel it’s too rooted in a banker’s perspective. The authors’ survey what’s out there or in development to attract people away from traditional banks? With the exception of blockchain and P2P lending I don’t see any of the ‘innovations’ being developed by non-banks as ‘killer apps’ which would compel me to make radical changes to how I interact with banks on a day to day basis.
But beyond day to day banking my motivation to change is still quite strong and stems from what I think are compelling reasons to avoid banking in its current state.
My concerns with current banking are:
• Safety
• Reward for risk
• Security of personal information.

One of the traditional functions of money is that it has been a safe way of holding a portion of one’s wealth. However from the GFC, we know how perilously close some banks came to collapse and in the case of Cyprus foreign account holders took a haircut on their deposits to preserve the liquidity of the banks. Since the GFC, these provisions have become reasonably common internationally and could be invoked should another crisis occur.
So if bank deposits aren’t as safe as we thought then why are interest rates so low? Interest was traditionally seen as a reward for risk and for postponing consumption into the future. But since the GFC we have seen interest rates decline to near zero and cheap credit has led to massive inflation in the price of housing in many countries. Should interest rates rise, many mortgages will be in default, endangering the liquidity of banks again.
Furthermore, where I live there is no explicit guarantee on bank deposits. So depending on your perspective of risk, the safer option in a low inflation, near zero interest rate environment might be to avoid using bank deposits and explore other options (including a safe).
This book makes some interesting points about the culture and legacy systems of traditional banks holding back progress but to me the most important point is that most system ‘innovation’ is to meet the changing regulatory environment, not to meet customer needs. Ultimately this is deadweight on the banks and their customers.
For example, in order to open an account at an Australian bank I was presented with 5 forms totalling over 50 pages. It took 2 hours with a banking official on an international call to complete them to the satisfaction of whom? The bank was compelled to force me to do this because of anti- money laundering regulation, but the effort required did not endear me to modern banking but to wonder how information irrelevant to my banking needs is being used by others?
Just before you think I’m descending into paranoia, my primary bank handled over all the banking records of an environmentalist to the police without any warrant. In a subsequent court case this was ruled to be totally illegal – they will need a warrant next time.
For this reason I would have liked more information on ‘blockchain’ developments as I think these are crucial to the development of real banking alternatives that would satisfy my needs.

Good and Expensive Ministry Tool

This was a great companion to a wonderful movie. The companion DVD contained the video clips on which the bible study was based. The lessons were clear and concise. The teacher guide didn't add much depth to the lesson. Each lesson review was a one page summary of the clip. The lessons were comprehensive and included a section for the student to complete independently of group discussion. The purpose was to assist them in putting the lessons learned into action.

As I used the kit for a real life bible study with several students, I had an issue with purchasing the bible study books independently of the kit ($6 each). Additionally, at least two of the clips referenced in the lesson are not available in the public domain, therefore students either have to purchase the movie or purchase a DVD study kit in order to maximize the benefits of the lessons. $18 is an expensive investment for a 4-week study.

Enjoying the book, video and Bible Study. Used the inflatable salad bar at our church picnic. Used the bar for ice cream plastic containers. Just added ice kept everything cool, no melting or mess. Very nice. Several comments what a good idea and where I puchased them.

Philip Newell is the Edward Tufte of Acoustics

Edward Tufte took a very dry and specialized subject--the presentation and interpretation of data--and made the subject accessible and even exciting. Not every one of us will be an astronaut, yet his explanations of precisely how NASA failed to understand their own data, once in the Challenger disaster and once in the Columbia tragedy, made us all much more aware of how cumulative institutional failure can compromise the mission of those charged to fly it and discourage the rest of us on earth who hope for a successful outcome.

Philip Newell takes on a different subject--the recording studio design--yet the effect its astonishingly similar. He deftly and unapologetically explains the inescapable conclusions that doom so many studio projects because of a growing institutional lack of fundamental acoustic knowledge, just like the bad launch decisions that doomed Challenger and Columbia. But he also teaches how disaster can be avoided by using the comprehensive knowledge he has collected over his lifetime and which he presents in this book.

What I like especially is that this book lacks the all-to-frequent hand-waving of other books on the subject. He is not afraid to take a stand, and he is not afraid to bring any amount of concrete data, algebraic analysis, geometric analysis, calculus, physics, or hard-won experience into the narrative to fully explain his point. And when his explanation is finished, one understands not only the point related to recording studio design, but one is able to apply that understanding to so many other contexts as well.

In this book I learned that the human ear is so sensitive that the faintest vibrations we can perceive are 1/10th the diameter of a hydrogen atom. I learned that a reverb chamber with an 8 second RT60 means that a sound wave bounces around for 1.7 miles before finally diminishing to 1/1,000,000th of its original intensity. And he makes no bones about the fact that when studio control rooms fill up with computers and hard disk drives that push the noise floor up to 40-50 dBA vs. a typical monitoring volume of 85 dBA, it's no fair to blame the lousy, lossy compression of MP3 files for a signal that never had more than 45 dB of dynamic range in the first place.

As others have said, this is a MUST READ for anybody considering building a recording studio, but it's a great reference for anybody interested in sound at all.

Not for the faint of heart, but good stuff!

If you are looking for a good reference book to construct a "professional" studio then Phil Newell's (author) book is for you. The investment in this book will be for life, and not something you read then give away. I showed the book to an architect friend, and he came up with the "good stuff" moniker in the title of myreview, and promptly purchased the book for his office.

The book is HIGHLY technical, and Phil goes to the trouble of explaining why things are constructed in the manor he describes. There is a lot of math, science of acoustics, and the physics of sound transfer. So it might be over the head for most people. It's not something the average band member looking for a crib to record his tunes is going to find of use.

If you are a serious musician, and have an architect and contractor build the studio for you, INSIST they read this book! The advice Mr. Newell gives will keep you from having that 'aw darn' moment in recording when something doesn't sound right. If you have the aptitude for high-end commercial construction techniques, or have worked in the professional construction trades you will get 95% of what Phil talks about. The other 5% is the math and acoustic reflection properties which can seem like voodoo.

The book covers all the basics from walls, to floor, windows, reflective surfaces, etc. Sections explain control room design, speaker placement, and acoustics to get the best representation of the recorded sound.

If you're a small time musician or gearhead that wants to build a studio in your home, garage, or small building, there are plenty of other good "cheap" books out there to get you started. I would not start with this book as it might frustrate you. But if you are serious, and I mean really serious about doing it right, and having a sound stage that people will talk about, then this book is worth the price.

Whether you're going to spend thousands or millions of dollars getting into the recording game, I would seriously urge you to spend the $80 on this book and read it thoroughly before dropping serious cash!!

I'm a former studio owner. If I'd known then what I learned after reading this book, I could've saved countless headaches and untold amounts of money.

The practical information in this book will really help open your eyes to a critical subject that's very much neglected in today's recording studios.

After offering an historical narrative describing the gradual departure from the theology of Thomas Aquinas, which led to a deficient theological method in the early twentieth century as implicated in the debates surrounding birth control, Aquinas and the Theology of the Body then surveys John Paul's pre-pontifical work. A thorough examination of the late pope's corpus reveals a definite respect for Aquinas even as he was intrigued by the consciousness-based school of phenomenology. In his many defenses of Humanae Vitae, John Paul II argued that since the human body represents the person to the world, the body speaks a certain language and has an inherent spousal meaning. While John Paul II did not offer any positive reference to Aquinas in his Theology of the Body catecheses, he did in other works. Finally, this study explores Aquinas's mature work, comparing and contrasting it with John Paul II's, to conclude that the Angelic Doctor's metaphysical anthropology provided the foundation for John Paul II's notion of the spousal meaning of the body, which is a seminal concept articulated in the Theology of the Body catecheses.

While there has been much scholarly study on the philosophy of Pope John Paul II, and of his indebtedness to Aquinas's thought, this is the first book to connect The Theology of the Body with Thomistic ideas.

I love Fr. Petri's style of writing! He goes very in depth on the Theological development behind TOB, and yet keeps it at a readable level. I love this book, and I think it will set the stage for a better understanding of TOB within the Catholic theological tradition.

I've known Christopher Michael for almost 8 years... Watching him continually grow as a poet and perfect his craft is so inspiring... The words he speaks and the fire and passion he infuses into each piece makes the stories come alive... I hear his voice in my head when I read his book.... I see the passion and animation in his face.... I hear the sublet inflections in voice when he wants you to really GET the messages he is trying to convey... Bravo Christopher!!

So much more than a collection of poems......

This book is advertised as a collection of poems , but it is so much more than that. It is a glimpse into Christopher Michael's life. It is a reality check that details the many phases we encounter during our time on this side of the dirt. This book doles out the happy, sad, educational, funny, and everything in between. It will make you experience almost every emotion known to mankind. This is the book of poems that you've been waiting to add to your collection.

I haven't even finished the book and I'm already in love. This is such a great collection of poems. He is such a gifted poet! I love how diverse his poems are. There is a collection on funny, inspirational, educational and just plain awesome poems. If you don't get this book you are missing out!!!
