I would like to introduce our new book entitled: Recirculating Aquaculture. This book (now in its 2nd edition) replaces my previous book entitled: Recirculating Aquaculture Systems which is now out of print. The original textbook was used as the primary resource for the Cornell University Short course which I started in 1994 and an undergraduate course on recirculating aquaculture principles in 1985. The new book has been expanded roughly by 200 pages. We added a new chapter on denitrification (by Dr. Jaap vin Rijn) and expanded the biofiltration-nitrification chapter into two chapters (one on processes and the other on design). Also of special interest is a chapter on aquaponics written by Dr. James Rakocy from the University of the Virgin Islands, which was added to the 2nd edition of the original text. We think the text effectively covers basic fish management and aquaponics as well as addressing all aspects on the design and management of recirculating aquaculture systems. We have also made the book's software available on the CAV website along with additional software that you will find useful, e.g., pH, alkalinity, carbon dioxide spreadsheets for fresh or saltwater. Software on our website that is described in the book s Appendix includes the following: a) fish tank design, b) carbon dioxide control, c) fish farm economic analysis, d) pipe flow friction losses, e) LHO and dissolved gas concentrations, f) air lift pumps. The software programs are a nice compliment to the book chapters that give the basic theory and mathematical calculations behind so many of the design problems that face aquaculturalists. The text book is fully referenced and provides a very complete list of tables on conversion factors and other pertinent information specific for aquaculture. Several chapters are written by authors who are well known in the aquaculture community and combined have over 100 years of experience in aquacultural engineering. All are prominent members of the Aquacultural Engineering Society.

Dear Dr. Timmons, In fact, I had been thinking about congratulating you since about the time I started reading your wonderful book, Recirculating Aquaculture, a couple of months ago. However, something or the other always came up and delayed my resolve. Today, I have the honor of conveying to you, what I really mean and feel about your book. The one word which could sum up this extraordinary book, should be Bible of RAS . This book is NOT just an academic exercise, but it is a practical and prudent guide to the Nuts and Bolts of a Venture called Recirculating Aquaculture System. It is a vital Reference Book for all those who intend to pursue research and development of RAS as an academic exercise. However, it is a MUST read for entrepreneurs, bankers, investors, accountants and government officials- those who intend to believe in Recirculating Aquaculture Technology or simply put a 21st century answer to Sustainable Aquaculture with highest productivity. There are nineteen chapters in the book and each chapter is a benchmark in itself, especially the Rule of Thumb. The clarity of thought and experiment could not be closer!! Dr. Timmons, you have rendered a yeoman service to the entrepreneurs of RAS. I would recommend to each and everyone, who care to undertake RAS, to read chapter 17. It is about the real perspective of RAS as a new venture. This chapter will be thoroughly appreciated equally by a start up entrepreneur to a seasoned businessman. In fact, your personal experience in running a commercial operation has given you an in-depth knowledge, while sharing those without inhibitions make this book absolutely out of the ordinary and truly a Guide. The chapter nineteen deals with Aquaponics, comes as a silver lining to an all encompassing , no-nonsense, extraordinarily prudent , brilliant book on a subject that is beholden to provide answer to the critical problem of 40% shortage of animal protein requirement of over 7 billion homo sapiens by 2020. In my opinion, Recirculating Aquaculture is going to set the standards for future writers intending to write books on subjects as intense as advanced technologies. About the Author
Michael B. Timmons, Ph.D. Dr. Michael Timmons received his B.S. in Agricultural Engineering from the Ohio State University, his M.S. in Agricultural Engineering from the University of Hawaii, and his Ph.D. from Cornell University. Dr. Timmons has worked in aquacultural engineering for 25 years as a researcher, teacher, and extension specialist. He has published widely and has served as primary editor on many of the Aquacultural Engineering Society meeting proceedings and for the series of bi-annual meetings sponsored by Virginia Tech on Water Recirculation Systems. He was one of the founders of the Aquacultural Engineering Society and has served in several officer positions including President. Dr. Timmons currently occupies the J. Thomas Clark Professorship of Entrepreneurship and Personal Enterprise, Biological and Environmental Engineering Department, Cornell University. Dr. Timmons has been a principle investor (he put his house on the line!) in the design, construction, and operation of a commercial recirculating fish production system and thus provides the viewpoint of a commercial aquaculturist in addition to his experience as a researcher and extension specialist. James M. Ebeling, Ph.D. Dr. James Ebeling has a B.S. and M.S. in physics from Albion College in Albion, Michigan and Washington State University in Pullman, Washington, respectively. He has a second M.S. in agricultural engineering from Washington State University and has three years of formal training at the University of California, Davis in Aquacultural Engineering. He has his Ph.D. in Biological Resources Engineering from the University of Maryland, College Park, Maryland, where he worked on the kinetics of biofilters operating on aquacultural systems. In November 2006, James was selected as a Fulbright Senior Specialists Candidate (Council for International Exchange of Scholars, Washington DC) James has been involved in aquaculture for over 25 years and has cultured over 20 species of fish.

Recirculating Aquaculture

Recirculating Aquaculture by M.B. Timmons and J.M. Ebeling (editors) describes all aspects
pertaining to the culture of fish and other aquatic organisms in closed recirclating systems. It provides
the engineering information needed to design and build systems wherein fish are reared under
high densities. While most fish reared commercially have been reared in ponds because it
is generally cheaper, there is a trend to rear higher value species in recirculating
aquaculture systems. The book covers all aspects from system design, to filtration, solid
waste removal,aeriation, the role of bacteria for nitrification and denitrification, disease
control etc. Some in the industry see closed systems aquaculture as being like rearing chickens
under high densities. Tilapia has been touted as the next mass produced aquaculture product
because they can be reared athigh densities, provided water quality is maintained. A less
energy intensive type of recirculating aquaculture that raises both fish and vegetables in
recirculating system is aquaponics. Chapter 19 by Dr. James Rakocy of the University of the
Virgin Islands pertains to the floating raft aquaponics system that he designed. Other groups
have copied this system in various parts of the USA and abroad. Hence, many of the people who
buy this book will do so specifically to learn about aquaponics. This is a large book (975 pages).
It may be too technical for those without some scientific training. It is the bible for those
interested in recirculating aquaculture systems (which is the title of two earlier
editions of the same book).

The bible of recirculating aquaculture.

This is the most comprehensive book on this subject available. Even though some of the information is very technical and requires an engineering background to understand. Most of the book contains information usable by people interested in constructing and operating recirculating aquaculture systems, such as aquaponic systems and other RAS type of operations.

Recirculating Aquaponics

This book was used as a basis for my research on water airlifts. Now I am a believer and a discoverer with my teacher who is an innovator of Aquaponic pumps and reducing the cost of electricity that most Aquaponic farmers have not yet discovered or improved on their systems and still running the old powerhead pond pumps which are years old. We are incorporating solar panels to take the system off the grid. Great book and going to meet them at the Aquaponics Association Conference in 2012 Denver.

I got this book because it was one of the recommended books to have on Complex analysis. Unfortunately when I received it and attempted to open the book, if you can imagine my surprise, the printed text was bound in reverse. That is, the front started with the catalog of Dover books, Index, ...etc. and the back of the book was where the Contents, Chapter 1, ... etc. were. It was like reading in an Arabic style (Right to left). I was very disappointed.

Child of the Storm

The story takes place in Zululand, Africa. It happens so that Allan Quatermain stops by his Zulu friend's kraal (to those of you who never read Haggard, Kraal=household) to find that yet another friend is madly in love with the well known beauty: Mameena, or, in other words, Child of the Storm. Allan is curious to see this well known Mameena, but his friend who is in love with Mameena (his name is Saduko) goes on a crazy battle to win 100 cattle for Mameena's dowry. After going with Saduko on his quest and helping him win 600 cattle, Allan meets Mameena, and determines she is the most beautiful woman he has ever seen, and, though at that time Africans were thought of as savages (most unjustly, I have to add), Allan, after observing some treachery done by Mameena while pretending to be unconscious, after knowing she was false, cannot find any reason to resist her love to him, for indeed Mameena tries to engage him in a marriage, but Allan remembers her treachery and tells her no. Many adventures follow after that, until the Zulu King declares Mameena a witch, and Mameena pleads guilty. It is not the kind of Salem witchcraft that is talked about here. It is more like herb-knowledge and doctoring that the Zulus call witchcraft. After recieving her death sentence for many more offenses, including causing a civil war and it's outcome, Mameena makes a last wish. The last wish is... You'll have to figure out this as you read along with the mystery of Mameena's character. Suggested background books: Any Allan Quatermain book. Another great work from a great griot.

My 7th book by Haggard was not a disappointment. He writes as if creating a work of art. Let him lead your eyes around this canvas set in Africa complete with multi-dimensional characters who will both attract and repel. Be prepared for the depiction of tribal wisdom and folly sketched within and without.

My bar is high when it comes to ratings. I try to compare all authors of all times. HR Haggard is at the top of the adventure fiction genre. He takes the reader into the unstable history of Africa where indiginous tribes, english, dutch and portugese settlers carved out a continent still in flux today. Haggard brings characters from all these groups to life with a realism rarely found. As described by the other reviewers this story is 2nd in a series. The books take the reader through the Zulu tribes violent history with the addition of fictional characters full of adventure, passion and commitment. This is a cannot stop reading book in a cannot stop reading series by a cannot stop reading author .

Looks great

The point of this book is that the concept is king. Focus on great ideas, and only then should you focus on crafting them with whatever tools you need - PhotoShop, InDesign, and so on. To illustrate (excuse the pun) the point, every single ad in the book has been done as a pencil sketch (or comp, or scamp, or rough, depending on your preferred terminology). These sketches alone are beautifully done. They cover many of the most famous ads of all time, and they do make their point well: the great ideas shine through.

The book is broken up into expected sections: Print, TV, Taglines, Strategy and Ideas, Integrated, and so on. There is detailed coverage of different types of strategy, a series of `tools' to help generate ideas, and lots and lots of examples - including some (often very good) from Barry's own students. The author makes some very good distinctions. For example, many advertising teachers insist that students avoid puns. Barry draws the distinction between various types of headline that use bad puns and other headlines - many of them classic ads - that use strong double-meanings. As I think George Felton says in his great book (Advertising: Concept and Copy), "It's got to cut both ways" - in other words, both meanings need to work. Anyway, it's a worthwhile discussion.

Barry clearly has a lot of experience both in agencies and in teaching. Sometimes he over-explains the point, but I actually don't mind this because at least it means it's well understood.

There's a lot that you'd find in other good advertising books, like "Hey Whipple" and "Advertising: Concept and Copy" but there's enough new material to make it worth adding to your library. I've been getting an enormous amount from it already.

A must for any ad student

This covers it all, in a way I've never seen before. As a graduate of one of the world's best graduate programs for advertising, I couldn't help but notice a good piece of my education could have been skipped if I'd read this earlier. It's my bible; I still reference it though I work at a top agency in NYC. Gold.

So much to learn

This the the advertising bible. If all advertising followed what is written in this book, it would be a better place with less "IN YOUR FACE" advertising. It would create a world of more thought provoking and relationship based branding influence.

It reminds you that advertising starts at the concept and is an art that you have to slowly build and perfect.
Thank you Pete, I see my job in a different light.

In fact I rarely read books cover to cover. But I just had to write a review this time. This book was so compelling and fascinating and well supported I literally could not put it down. I read it cover to cover in one sitting. If you want to understand more about this topic, THIS IS A MUST! There are a couple of dry parts that I attribute to the author thoroughly explaining topics with supporting evidence. You will find that devout Christians will bash books like this and rush to offer 1 star reviews never having bought the book or read any part of it. TRUST ME - That is all the more reason to get this book.

Those customs of love. Tu bi-shvat is interesting

Tu bi-Shvat!
All people read, crowns and fruits.
All of them idolized someone palm trees, who oaks.
On them hung up gifts, decorated their wreaths.
Everywhere there are giants, 4500 years.
They were always preserved, those volshebna and Sveta.
Who was proud of a plane tree where that dates grew.
Read cereals you.
Knew all fruits of a lechebna.
Vitamins are red.
Crops, crops very much have to you.
Carried in regaly, decorated temples we.
Those customs of love.
Tu bi-shvat is interesting.
It remained to us.
Here wheat and oats, grapes, a fig I sprouted.
That pomegranate, olives, honey.
We have seven plants.
It is eternity, it is a sort.
New Year of trees here.
It landings blossoms.
That before grows, will call last year's.
Africa, Libya.
Africa, Sahara.
Caravans life for you and it is an award.
Monad history.
The Red Sea in depth attracts us strictly.
How many travelers, are so much and deputies.
From Atlantis too to depth of Sahara there were you.
Here and Ladino was born from an ice floe.
Difficult destiny in the desert of a bike.
How to find an oasis? Date? Milk?
Whether there was a flood that?
Life was saved who?
How many could dig?
That to find waters?
That the palm tree blossomed.
Also Earth survived.
And Hamsina there.
Hurricanes squall.
Red dawn with fiolety all.
Lovely it my Homeland.
