Great, Gritty Poetry

The words that John Emery weaves together in `What I Wrote About You' create visceral and gritty poems that pile on top of one another, forcing you to contemplate the topics that are dissected on the page. Sometimes his poetry seems to be longing for more, other times it appears jilted and hurt, but most of all it comes across fully developed and emotionally charged. This book is separated into four distinct sections, and it is easy to see how Emery's skills as a writer progress as the pages turn.
Some of my favorite poems were Waiting for Trains, Showering in the Dark, the all encompassing Alphabet Poem, and The Day After. While the poems start as single entities, as the book continues they begin to connect together more frequently. The short poetic lines start to linger and contain more detailed lines of prose. This collection certainly shows Emery's talents as a poet, and forces the reader to come to terms with the gritty substances that make up the mess of our humanity.
